Job Description

Holtec is seeking a Senior Nuclear Systems Engineer to lead Nuclear Island level design for a next-generation SMR program, acting as the technical authority and mentoring engineers while coordinating engineering, manufacturing, and licensing activities to deliver safe, compliant plant designs. This role is based in Camden, NJ with hybrid work options.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee cross-disciplinary system engineering and integration for key SMR-300 plant systems, maintaining technical consistency across engineering domains.
  • Develop and maintain system requirements, interface definitions, and component specifications to support detailed design, analyses, and licensing activities.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level systems engineers, providing design guidance and reviewing calculations, specifications, and engineering deliverables.
  • Conduct and supervise engineering analyses, with emphasis on thermal-fluid performance and overall plant-system behavior.
  • Lead technical trade studies and design evaluations that influence plant architecture, safety, and performance outcomes.
  • Collaborate with licensing, safety, and regulatory teams to ensure designs support safety cases and comply with applicable codes and regulatory expectations.
  • Work with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to ensure designs are technically robust, manufacturable, and executable.
  • Support technical reviews, develop design documentation, and participate in internal design approvals aligned with program milestones and quality standards.
  • Assume the technical lead role for designated Nuclear Island systems, owning integration, requirements, and cross-disciplinary alignment.
  • Deliver the assigned system-level engineering scope for the SMR-300 development program with emphasis on quality, safety, and regulatory rigor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Nuclear, Electrical, or related); Master's degree preferred.
  • Eight or more years of progressive engineering experience with increasing technical responsibility.
  • Experience as a system owner or lead engineer for safety-related Nuclear Island systems on an operating or new-build nuclear plant is highly preferred.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop junior engineers, including review of designs, calculations, and system-level deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, resolve complex technical issues, and drive system-level decisions.
  • Strong fundamentals in heat transfer and fluid dynamics as applied to complex plant systems.
  • Experience developing designs, specifications, drawings, and technical requirements in collaboration with engineers, suppliers, and manufacturers.
  • Experience in the nuclear energy industry in a system design or systems engineering capacity is preferred; candidates from aerospace, defense, or other regulated industries are encouraged.
  • Familiarity with engineering and design tools such as SmartPlant, Mathcad, AutoCAD, Pipe Flo, HTRI, Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM), and DOORS NG is preferred.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • EIT and/or PE certification preferred.

Location

Camden, NJ or North Pittsburgh, PA. Relocation assistance is available.

Compensation

Annual compensation based on skills and experience ranges from $140,000 to $165,000.
