Job Description
Define scalable systems and help power eBay’s Value-Added Services (VAS) platform in San Jose, CA. This Software Engineer 2 role focuses on building resilient distributed systems and microservices, partnering across backend and user-facing development, and using monitoring and testing to keep services reliable and performant.
Location: San Jose, CA (onsite)
Compensation: USD 137,669 - 196,500 per yearly
What you will do
- Define, design, and implement highly scalable, resilient, and performant distributed systems for the VAS platform.
- Create clear, well-documented design docs and participate in design and code reviews.
- Follow the Definition of Done (DoD) process by maintaining over 80% unit test coverage and meeting other release criteria standards.
- Build backend services and user-facing interfaces for VAS, using tools and frameworks across the stack.
- Use PromQL with Sherlock to analyze application status and support optimal uptime and performance across microservices.
- Architect and implement microservices with Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot to improve scalability, efficiency, and robustness.
- Manage diverse data needs using NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Redis, along with SQL databases, to optimize performance.
- Use JUnit for unit testing and TestNG for integration tests to maintain a reliable testing framework.
- Design and implement user-facing experiences with JavaScript, React, and Marko.
- Use Java to architect experience service layers, orchestrating downstream responses for seamless integration across iOS, Android, and web clients.
- Apply technical and domain expertise to address product challenges.
Education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field, plus one year of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
- Object-Oriented Design and Java experience in large-scale application development (1 year).
- Computer Science foundation experience (data structures, algorithms, OOPs, OOA/D) (1 year).
- Experience building data-driven applications (e.g., RDBMS, NoSQL, ElasticSearch) (1 year).
- Experience designing and developing microservices (1 year).
- Experience with REST API frameworks (1 year).
- Experience with GraphQL (1 year).
- Experience delivering results in fast-paced environments (agile methodologies, Test Driven Development, CI/CD) (1 year).
- Experience with Spring/Springboot for microservices (1 year).
- Experience with messaging systems (1 year).
- Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Remote roles are not eligible for U.S. visa sponsorship.

- Base pay may vary based on factors including location, skills, and experience.
