This senior electrical engineering role leads the design of next generation surgical robotic systems, guiding concepts through production and market launch at Smith & Nephew in Pittsburgh, PA, with a hybrid work arrangement. The position acts as a technical lead on design teams, collaborating with cross-functional groups to define electrical architectures and mixed-signal PCBA designs for robotic joint replacement platforms.
Responsibilities
- Direct electrical design activities for new surgical robotic systems from concept through production and launch
- Serve as the technical lead on design teams, working autonomously while mentoring and supporting fellow engineers
- Develop electrical system architectures and mixed-signal PCBA designs, including schematics, component selection and PCB layout
- Conduct board bring-up, functional testing, fault finding and root-cause analysis on complex embedded systems
- Design, assemble and test prototypes, evaluating performance against defined requirements and specifications
- Create and execute test plans to support design verification and validation
- Lead and participate in design reviews, providing technical insights to drive quality and regulatory compliance
- Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, software, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, systems and regulatory partners
- Ensure design documentation and processes comply with quality systems and regulatory requirements
Requirements
- A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with at least 6 years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 8+ years of relevant experience
- Hands-on experience designing mixed-signal PCBA schematics and layouts using ECAD tools such as Altium
- Proven background in embedded systems, 32-bit microcontrollers, board bring-up and debugging real-time applications
- Solid understanding of communication protocols including SPI, I2C, USB, TCP/IP and EtherCAT
- Experience integrating sensors, motors and computing technologies into complex electrical systems
- Background in EMC EMI compliant design and applying DFM and DFT principles
- Experience working in regulated environments such as medical devices is highly valued
