Job Description

The Structural Engineer will design and specify calculations, drawings, and construction documents for steel, concrete, and masonry structures using both standard and advanced analysis methods, including finite element analysis. This is a hybrid/remote role based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with access to an Oak Ridge office as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate in the design phase by developing calculations using established methods and advanced analysis tools, including finite element analysis software.
  • Produce design drawings for structural systems constructed from steel, concrete, and masonry.
  • Prepare construction specifications for structural projects.
  • Perform essential functions such as intermittent sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting; lifting up to 20 lbs; potential travel; working near construction equipment and potentially hazardous conditions; and exposure to dust, gas or fumes, noise, temperature, or humidity; possible work at heights.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required to meet government customer requirements and applicable regulations.
  • B.S. in Structural or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 3 to 12 years of post-education experience.
  • Ability to follow and implement established quality procedures and ensure work is procedurally compliant.
  • Experience designing with steel, concrete, and masonry, with emphasis on seismic design.
  • Experience applying local and national codes such as IBC, AISC, ACI, and ASCE.
  • Competence in using finite element software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn new software as needed for project success.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where requirements may evolve during projects.
  • Proficient in working and communicating in a digital environment.

Work Location

This position supports remote or hybrid work with an emphasis on Oak Ridge, TN. For employees within 50 miles of the Oak Ridge office, hybrid arrangements require in-office presence at least 50% of the week. For those located beyond 50 miles, a remote arrangement with quarterly travel to the Oak Ridge office is available. For hybrid and remote work, a secured U.S. location approved by the company must be maintained.

Essential Functions

  • Intermittent sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, and lifting up to 20 lbs; longest distance carried about 50 feet.
  • Hand manipulation for simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine motor tasks; both hands may be used.
  • Occasional overhead and below-shoulder work to handle supplies and drawings.
  • No foot controls required.
  • Must remain alert and capable of adapting to onsite and field environments.
