Job Description

Join the Maryland Department of Transportation as Team Leader within the SHA Office of Traffic and Safety, Geometric Design and Traffic Engineering Operational Analysis Team. This onsite role in Anne Arundel County offers a competitive salary range of USD 91,761 to 142,914 per year and presents opportunities to guide complex traffic control design reviews, oversee final design plans for design requests, and coordinate geometric designs for large scale projects. You will provide direction across SHA divisions, represent SHA in meetings, and contribute to safer roadways through engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the thorough evaluation of complex engineering designs for traffic control devices and transportation or development projects affecting SHA roadways.
  • Oversee the review of Design Requests for new or modified signals and other traffic control devices.
  • Manage the review process for Final Design Plans associated with approved Design Requests.
  • Coordinate the review of geometric designs tied to large scale design-build projects or developer traffic impact studies.
  • Ensure engineering designs meet established theories, principles, policies, and standards.
  • Administer the Specific Service Signing program (LOGO), the Maryland Product Evaluation List (MPEL), and the In-Service Performance of Guardrail End Treatments.
  • Provide operational direction and assistance to other divisions within OOTS, SHA District offices, Highway Development, and other SHA offices.
  • Assist District staff in developing concepts to address complex engineering and safety projects.
  • Represent SHA in meetings with federal, state, and local agencies, community groups, developers, and the public.

Requirements

  • Maryland Professional Engineer license required, evidence presented at the time of appointment, in the appropriate option.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience managing engineering projects as a licensed professional engineer.
  • Selective Qualification: 1 year of experience in traffic engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering analysis software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, Highway Capacity Software, and Vissim.
  • Proficiency in conducting and reviewing traffic impact studies, traffic signal warrant studies, and reviewing traffic engineering design plans.
  • Strong understanding of roundabout design, standards, guidelines, and current research.
  • Expert knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the Highway Safety Manual, and related safety policies or guidelines.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate statewide programs and specific projects.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong internal and external customer service abilities.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
