The Controls Design Engineer role is a direct hire opportunity based on site in Lansing, Michigan. The position focuses on developing machine tool controls from concept through production, encompassing design, programming, and analysis for control systems to advance the next generation of equipment.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $95,000 to $115,000 per year. Benefits include health insurance, dental, vision, 401(k), and a generous paid time off package.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design of machine controls to meet internal and customer specifications with an emphasis on cost efficiency and engineering time savings, reusing existing designs and programs when possible
- Develop component layouts that satisfy all applicable specifications, prioritizing safe, reliable, compact, and simple designs with minimal cost
- Program machine controllers to operate efficiently and with complete safety features
- Assess design capabilities, provide accurate information and documentation to keep projects on schedule and aligned with customer specs
- Coordinate and lead control design reviews with the Mechanical Project Engineer and assigned Coordinators prior to building
- Provide all required documentation to the customer for scheduled approvals
- Maintain organized records of purchase orders and drawing approvals for assigned jobs; obtain competitive quotations for electrical enclosures, push button stations, etc., and issue requisitions with long lead time items in mind to keep the project on track
- Work closely with shop personnel during build, startup, debugging, and run off of the machine; support service technicians and training during startup at customer sites
- Provide support to the Sales and Parts Department as needed and participate in meetings regarding job content, schedule, and progress as requested by the customer, sales, manufacturing or management
- Remain current with the latest industry technology and inform the Engineering Manager of trends that could enhance machine designs
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Controls Engineering or a related field is preferred; highly qualified candidates without a degree but with relevant experience may be considered. A High School Diploma or GED is required
- 2 to 3+ years of experience in machine tools or a related industry, with 5+ years preferred
- Experience with engines or powertrains is a plus
- Working knowledge of Allen Bradley, Siemens and Fanuc PLCs and HMI software
- Experience with EPLAN design software is a plus
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Windows operating systems
- Strong analytical abilities to compile data, recognize patterns, draw logical conclusions and make actionable recommendations
- Self motivated, self directed, with strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to work hands on in the plant and at customer facilities as needed

Work Environment and Travel
This is a standard first shift role. Some travel to customer sites may be required, but travel will not be common and is limited to special circumstances. Travel may be local, domestic, or on rare occasions international.
