Job Description
Based in Reading, Pennsylvania and onsite, this BI Software Engineer I role sits at the intersection of data insight and enterprise systems. You will design, develop, and support BI applications while guiding associate engineers in BI best practices, helping to deliver innovative solutions for a broad set of stakeholders within Penske Truck Leasing and Logistics.
What you will be doing
- Participate in all phases of the BI software development lifecycle by supporting ongoing efforts, troubleshooting issues as they arise, and delivering new modules across multiple small to mid-size projects.
- Lead the design of selected software components and propose new frameworks, applications, and features driven by industry trends.
- Consult with process owners to review requirements and translate them into effective systems.
- Support integration efforts to merge BI platforms with enterprise systems and applications.
- Collaborate with a diverse team and mentor junior BI software engineers.
- Serve as the primary contact and lead support for multiple BI applications.
- Play a key role in supporting the application lifecycle from design through testing, release, and ongoing support under direction from senior BI engineers and leads.
- Work with technical and business leaders and product owners to capture requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Develop and maintain a variety of reports, dashboards, and visualizations, and design BI applications that connect to databases and data warehouses.
- Analyze data to identify discrepancies and performance bottlenecks and apply data modeling techniques to enable actionable insights.
- Contribute to data-driven decision making by translating data into analytical solutions and recommendations.
- Support mission-critical applications, assist in resolving customer issues, and produce clean, well-documented code adhering to coding standards.
- Triage production issues and collaborate with multiple teams to analyze and resolve problems.
- Assign and review work for junior and offshore BI engineers and participate in new hire interviews.
- Influence the discovery and decision-making process when changes to standards, tools, conventions, and design patterns are required.
- Provide business support by addressing user questions, concerns, and implementation feasibility discussions.
- Communicate status and issues to team members and stakeholders, working with project teams and cross-functional teams to ensure timely delivery and smooth hand-offs.
- Ensure solutions are sustainable across implementations and use, troubleshoot open issues, perform bug fixes, and maintain on-time delivery.
Penske responsibilities

Penske qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent software development experience.
- 5-7 years of technology experience.
- 4+ years of hands-on BI application development using tools such as Qlik Sense, Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
- Experience with the full BI software development lifecycle.
- Proficiency in Java, React, Angular, jQuery, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, APIs, and web services.
- Familiarity with UI/UX design frameworks and patterns.
- Experience in relational database design, implementation, and data modeling techniques.
- Understanding of big data analytics and reporting, with exposure to cloud environments such as AWS.
- Experience with data-driven testing approaches and analytical methods, including regression models and advanced analytics software.
- Knowledge of technical project management and BI design frameworks and patterns.
- Awareness of industry-wide technology strategies and best practices.
- Experience with Agile methodology and strong troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to research emerging software development frameworks and tools, and estimate medium to large projects.
