Construction Area Engineer

As a Construction Area Engineer within INDOT’s Seymour District in Aurora, Indiana, you serve as a primary technical subject matter expert and strategic liaison for construction and maintenance activities. The role supports the full lifecycle of infrastructure projects, from preliminary field checks through the Final Construction Record, while providing oversight to a multidisciplinary team.

Role Overview

In this onsite position, you function as the central point of expertise for engineering execution and coordination across INDOT’s major construction-related programs. You combine engineering oversight with direct supervision responsibilities to guide project development and completion.

Responsibilities

• Develop engineering policies and project plans for projects involving unique or controversial issues that have significant impact on major organizational programs.
• Provide budget-related information, conduct research, and make recommendations to support long-range planning.
• Evaluate engineering policies, recommend revisions, and approve and implement policy updates.
• Assess the impact of changes to engineering policies, procedures, and standards with statewide implications, provide recommendations to a supervisor, integrate changes into existing programs, and direct research and evaluation efforts.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required.
• Valid Indiana driver’s license.
• Broad knowledge of civil and transportation disciplines.
• Understanding of department design standards, policies, and practices.
• Understanding of NEPA and NHPA processes.
• Knowledge of computer applications including CAD, spreadsheets, databases, and scheduling.
• Knowledge of traffic operations analysis methods such as capacity analysis and crash analysis.
• Knowledge of alternatives development, decision-making, and engineering economic analysis.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications; define problems; collect appropriate data; establish facts; define and communicate issues with stakeholders; and draw valid engineering solutions.
• Ability to manage routine and sensitive interactions with government officials, consulting firms/contractors, and the public.
• Ability to identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, apply sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations.
• Ability to plan and develop engineering projects involving unique or controversial problems and/or novel engineering approaches.

Experience and Leadership Background

A degree is not required; however, candidates must have at least four (4) years of professional experience in engineering, civil engineering, transportation research, or a closely related field. Additionally, two (2) years of experience as a group or project leader providing work direction and training to engineering technicians and/or lower-level engineers, or two (2) years of experience conducting engineering-related research applying the knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role, may be considered.

Compensation

Salary range: USD 85,020 to 140,344 per year, commensurate with education and work experience. Pay starts from $85,020.00 per year. The position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours required to complete essential functions. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive the base biweekly salary.
