Controls Engineer
Job Description
Coilcraft’s custom machine design and build team is looking for a Controls Engineer to help develop and refine automated machinery control solutions. This onsite role in Cary, IL centers on building PLC-based systems, designing controls for high-performance equipment, and troubleshooting as part of a broader automation effort.
The position focuses on improving machine operation through better PLC programming and system integration, supporting higher uptime and reduced cycle times, while coordinating with multiple control components across the automation stack.
What you’ll do
- Develop and optimize Programmable Logical Controls (PLCs) to improve machine efficiency by reducing cycle times, increasing uptime, and minimizing operator intervention.
- Design control systems for high-performance automated machinery, including researching and selecting components, creating panel layouts and schematics, programming, and troubleshooting.
- Work across related automation systems such as servo systems, stepper systems, Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), power supplies, motion controllers, and communication loops.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Electronics.
- 2+ years of prior experience programming PLCs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office for documentation.
- CAD experience for schematic documentation.
- Vision systems experience is a valuable asset.
- Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills.

Compensation and location
- Location: Cary, IL (onsite)
- Salary: USD 85,000 - 115,000 per year
