Fire Protection Engineer
Job Description
Fire Protection Engineer position with Bowers + Kubota Consulting in Waipahu, Hawaii (onsite).
Responsibilities
- Research and gather information.
- Operate CAD equipment and software to create, modify, and finalize fire protection drawings for construction projects and design reports.
- Work from drawings, sketches or scanned images, customer drawings, or government drawings or specifications.
- Prepare final drawings, verify dimensions, ensure information is consistent across drawings, and confirm completeness.
- Prepare drawings, specifications, construction cost estimates, and basis for design for Fire Protection including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and life safety code analysis.
- Modify plans using manual drafting techniques and draft finished designs from sketches.
- Conform to the established filing system for production drawings.
- Interpret specifications to meet city, state, and Federal requirements as needed.
- Prepare periodic project status reports and review contract requirements to understand deliverables per phase.
- Revise documents per markup by project lead and management; prepare submission packages per contract requirements.
- Provide marketing and technical support; present and speak for the department at meetings and conferences.
- Conduct site investigations and make field measurements; create project schedules to meet submittal dates.
- Coordinate work activities with other departments and regulatory agencies; learn and apply fire protection engineering principles and processes.
- Mentor junior staff; develop design concepts and project goals; manage multiple tasks and schedules.
- Prepare quantity take-offs and opinions of probable construction costs; review project financial health.
- Follow up on contractual obligations and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering.
- Licensed in Fire Protection Engineering is required.
- Minimum of three years of industry experience; experience with Federal Government project delivery.
- Proficiency with CAD and manual drafting; ability to follow project CAD standards and procedures.
- Ability to modify existing drawings to minimize new work and create new drawings when needed, in a timely fashion.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Prepare accurate detailed drawings from data from field surveys, as-built drawings, markups, worksheets, and design sketches; self-check for accuracy.
- Proficient with standard drafting software and plotters; able to operate MS Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of codes, regulations, engineering systems, and construction methods; understanding of project delivery methods and contracts.
- Ability to develop project programs, initial design concepts, and establish project goals; proven client management experience.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills; self-starter with strong follow-through; capable of handling multiple tasks and schedules.
- Valid driver’s license.
