Operational Technology (OT) Security Engineer
Job Description
National Fuel Gas Company is seeking an Operational Technology (OT) Security Engineer to join its Information Security department at the company headquarters in Williamsville, NY. In this onsite role, you will help engineer and govern OT security across the architecture and lifecycle of OT systems and networks, with an emphasis on automation, incident response, and resiliency for control environments.
Role focus
You will work across tactical, operational, and strategic levels to strengthen the OT information security program, deploy cybersecurity automation to support OT security event identification and handling, and use machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to help recognize trends and anomalies across the environment. The position also includes support for key operational technologies such as PLC, DCS, HMI, and historian data logging and reporting.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with operational stakeholders to apply current system security engineering methods to OT architecture, design, development, evaluation, and integration, supporting risk mitigation across OT systems and networks.
- Apply and maintain security policies to govern the OT information security program, including building and operational plans at tactical, operational, and strategic levels.
- Develop and leverage metrics to support an effective security program.
- Implement end-to-end cybersecurity programs in the IoT/OT space, with a strong execution and delivery orientation.
- Develop and deploy mitigation, remediation, and ongoing oversight programs to address OT-related information security risks.
- Track, categorize, and catalog known exceptions within the OT information security control environment, ensuring compensating practices are implemented.
- Use industry-leading frameworks and methodologies to maintain consistency and cross-industry alignment with best practices.
- Deploy cybersecurity automation tools to identify, manage, and disposition potential OT security events.
- Identify and deploy ML and AI approaches to proactively recognize trends and anomalies.
- Participate in the incident response program for timely identification, response, and remediation of OT-related information security incidents.
- Assist with development of comprehensive OT incident response playbooks that define processes, roles, and responsibilities for rapid execution.
- Deploy and maintain technologies that support a proactive OT information security control landscape.
- Develop resiliency in OT security operations to continue essential processes in the event of a cyberattack.
- Work with government, professional, and industry groups and consortiums to support a diverse and well-understood approach to OT information security operations.
- Engage internal stakeholders and third-party partners to validate that the OT security program mitigates potential risk and supports recovery from events at National Fuel.
- Provide support and security standards for PLC, DCS, HMI, Historian data logging and reporting, and associated instrumentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Information Security.
- 2-5 years of field experience in Information Security and/or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience in Controls, Automation Engineering, and associated software programs.
- Experience with PLC programming and HMI-based control systems.
- Experience in data communications, networking, and VPNs in the Windows environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, proven technical abilities, and strong computer skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Time management and multi-tasking abilities are essential.
- Flexible hours and day travel to company facilities and project sites throughout Western NY and Northwest/Central PA.

Compensation and benefits
- Base salary range: $62,500 - $90,000 per year.
- Exempt positions may also be eligible for an Annual Cash Bonus Plan.
