Principal Software Engineer - AWS/Python Modernization
Job Description
IntegraTouch is seeking a Principal-level modernization architect and senior hands-on software engineer to lead the AWS and Python transformation of a large-scale device management platform. This is a contract role focused on both technical discovery and production-grade implementation.
Role Overview
The initial phase focuses on leading technical assessment and future-state design for an AWS-based device management framework with approximately 50,000+ globally deployed devices. The engagement then transitions into building and leading implementation using Python and AWS, including modernization of legacy C#/.NET components and surrounding systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct a deep technical assessment of the current AWS environment and application architecture.
- Review existing source code, services, integrations, infrastructure, and deployment processes.
- Identify technical debt, architectural constraints, reliability issues, and modernization opportunities.
- Define the target cloud, software, and device-management architecture.
- Create a phased Technical Modernization Roadmap.
- Personally design, prototype, code, and build critical components of the solution.
- Develop production-quality software in Python using modern engineering practices.
- Design and implement APIs, services, integrations, and cloud-native application components.
- Modernize legacy C#/.NET/WPF functionality into modern cloud and web architectures.
- Work with modern front-end technologies, including React and/or Angular.
- Architect and implement AWS services for large-scale device management.
- Evaluate AWS IoT and related technologies for device communication, configuration, telemetry, and software distribution.
- Design event-driven, distributed, and highly available systems where appropriate.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, AWS CDK, and/or CloudFormation.
- Improve CI/CD, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, and observability.
- Build prototypes and proofs of concept to validate architectural decisions.
- Participate in code reviews and help establish engineering standards and patterns.
- Mentor and provide technical direction to other software and cloud engineers.
- Work directly with engineering leadership and stakeholders to convert strategy into working software.
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of progressive experience across software engineering, cloud engineering, and architecture.
- Proven experience leading complex application and cloud modernization efforts.
- Strong architecture and hands-on engineering expertise with AWS.
- Solid software engineering foundation with significant Python development experience.
- Experience designing and building distributed, scalable, and highly available production systems.
- Experience modernizing legacy applications and architectures.
- Experience with modern front-end frameworks, preferably React and/or Angular.
- Working knowledge of C#/.NET and legacy desktop application architectures.
- Strong experience with APIs, microservices, integrations, and event-driven architecture.
- Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform, AWS CDK, and/or CloudFormation.
- Strong experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, automated testing, monitoring, and observability.
- Ability to create architectures that are implementable, not only conceptual.
- Ability to prototype and engineer critical components personally when needed.
- Experience leading and mentoring other senior engineers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- U.S. Citizenship Required due to applicable customer, contractual, and project requirements.

Modernization Challenge and Scope
The current platform includes AWS infrastructure, legacy C#/.NET desktop components, Python-based services and web applications, and systems that support device configuration and software updates. The engagement is focused on determining how to modernize, rearchitect, and engineer the platform for the future rather than simply maintaining the current environment.
The next-generation platform must improve reliability, scalability, resiliency, and maintainability while supporting management of a large globally distributed device population. Responsibilities also include device configuration and lifecycle management, software and firmware update capabilities, intelligent routing and communications, cloud-native architecture and application design, automation and repeatability, observability and operational visibility, integration with future devices and services, and the ability to incorporate AI-driven capabilities.
The Principal Architect will help decide which components should be retained, refactored, replaced, or completely rearchitected.
Your Role: Architecture + Engineering
In the early phase, you will operate as the Principal Modernization Architect, performing technical discovery, evaluating the existing environment, defining future-state architecture, building prototypes, and producing an actionable Technical Modernization Roadmap. As the project moves into implementation, you will act increasingly as a Lead Software Engineer and technical authority to turn the architecture into production software.
You will also be expected to personally design, prototype, code, and build critical components of the solution.
