Job Description
Senior Automation and Controls Engineer position in Irvine, CA (hybrid) for CDM Smith.
Responsibilities
- Develop automation project solutions with guidance from senior staff.
- Program, test, and commission SCADA systems using PLC and HMI software including Rockwell Studio 5000, Schneider Electric Unity, GE iFix, Rockwell FactoryTalk, and AVEVA InTouch for System Platform.
- Configure SCADA servers, workstations, networks, and wireless links such as cellular, radio, and Wi-Fi.
- Develop SCADA reports using Dream Reports, XL Reporter, or Hach WIMS.
- Perform field acceptance testing (FATs) and on-site inspections to verify contractor conformance with control system requirements.
- Create instrumentation and control system designs from basic to moderately complex, including P&IDs, architectures, specifications, and control descriptions for programming.
- Prepare control system preliminary design reports (PDRs).
- Review shop drawings for control components, instrumentation, and panel wiring diagrams (basic to moderately complex).
- Respond to contractor RFIs under limited supervision.
- Independently develop basic to highly complex Operations & Maintenance manuals for PLC and HMI programming.
- Prepare budgets and construction cost estimates for automation projects.
- Prepare proposals and client presentations under senior supervision.
- Travel to project sites for client meetings, support on-call contracts, and start-up of control systems within the region.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Technology or related discipline; Professional Engineering (PE) license.
- Minimum 7 years of related experience.
- Equivalent additional directly related experience may substitute for the degree.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required, up to 20% of the time.
- Valid driver's license required.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
- Working knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity solutions.
- Knowledge of 3D and 4D CAD drafting.
