Job Description

General Motors is building commercial software that helps power how businesses operate, and this onsite role in Sunnyvale, CA focuses on delivering high-performance backend services for the GM Commercial Services software solution. You will set technical direction, shape architecture and APIs, and support engineering practices that raise quality across products used by internal and external customers.

Compensation: $153,200 - $269,100 per year, with an incentive pay program providing payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.

What you’ll build and lead

  • Provide technical leadership in designing and building the flagship GM Commercial Services Software.
  • Develop a strong understanding of GM Commercial Services business strategy and goals to guide engineering decisions.
  • Take a big-picture view to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for meaningful improvement across the organization.
  • Drive alignment on approaches to address priorities and lead the delivery of high leverage solutions with broad impact.
  • Raise the bar for engineering quality through improved best practices, exemplary code, strong documentation, automated tests, and thorough, precise monitoring.
  • Build and launch new products that deliver significant value to internal and external customers.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization, including dependency engineering teams, product, design, infrastructure, and operations.
  • Mentor junior and experienced engineers to support their technical growth.

Experience and qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience successfully designing and building large engineering projects, including productionization of scalable, reliable, performant systems.
  • Extensive experience in architecture and design, including architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling for new and existing systems.
  • Extensive experience with Java/Kotlin or Python.
  • Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with at least one public cloud provider: Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in an agile development environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Knowledge of software design patterns, object-oriented principles, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Passion for staying up-to-date with industry trends and technologies.
  • Strong product focus and product acumen.
  • Experience with project management, ensuring on-time team deliverables with high quality.
  • Experience with Databricks.
  • Experience with React and modern JavaScript libraries, plus HTML and CSS.
