Job Description

Senior Controls Engineer opportunities at Wunderlich-Malec Engineering in Albuquerque, NM (hybrid) offer a chance to lead electrical and control system design, oversee commissioning, and guide projects with potential team leadership and direct client interaction. Responsibilities

  • Review and develop system specifications and drawing packages to meet project needs.
  • Conduct factory testing as required to validate designs.
  • Provide ongoing support through construction and commissioning, including installation, wiring, checkout, and qualification activities.
  • Possibly lead a team of engineers to meet overall schedule requirements and ensure high quality outcomes.
  • Prepare scope-of-work definitions and hour estimates during proposals; manage projects of varying sizes from start to finish.
  • Engage in PLC or DCS programming, HMI/SCADA programming, network design, or IT/OT equipment work as appropriate.
  • Design 480 VAC systems, including motor branch circuits, power distribution, MCCs, and electrical equipment specifications; handle hazardous area design per Class I Div. 1 and Div. 2 requirements.
  • Specify, wire, troubleshoot, and calibrate instrumentation; develop control system schematics and equipment panel layouts; guide technicians in drawing production.
  • Apply NEC and related codes; perform site checks and start-ups of electrical and control systems at customer locations.
  • Produce final record documentation and deliver customer training on the system.
  • Work on electrical and control system integration projects across multiple industries, including life sciences.
  • Operate with independence across multiple concurrent projects; may assumeTechnical Lead or Project Manager responsibilities, including budgeting, scheduling, and scope management.
  • Manage purchasing and subcontractor activities; develop cost estimates and propose change orders as contracts evolve.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience. Interest in pursuing a PE license will be supported.
  • 10 years of relevant experience with capabilities in:
    • Electrical, instrumentation, and PLC control panel specifications for materials and labor
    • Electrical schematics design, including 480 VAC power distribution
    • Installation, checkout, and commissioning of electrical and control systems
    • Knowledge of NEC and local codes, including hazardous areas
    • Construction, installation support, documentation, and testing aligned with specifications and customer requirements
    • Documentation and organization of projects using CAD, Excel, and Visual Manufacturing
    • Review of fabricator drawings and external documentation; development of cost estimates for controls
    • Monitoring progress to deliver within budget and schedule
    • Experience in Life Sciences, Building Automation, Food and Beverage, Oil and Gas, or Mining
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to work with teams, subcontractors, and clients
  • PLC programming experience preferred; AutoCAD experience desired
  • Professional references (subordinate, peer, and manager)
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
