Job Description

Bowman Consulting Group, Ltd. invites a remote Senior Design Engineer, PV Systems to contribute from Paonia, Colorado. The role centers on designing photovoltaic systems, conducting modeling, and coordinating projects with occasional project management responsibilities.

Overview

Execute drafting and analytical work for utility-scale and commercial PV designs, coordinating with a multidisciplinary team and various project stakeholders. The position may include project management duties to guide projects from concept through completion.

Responsibilities

  • Receive general objectives and guidance, with further direction provided for complex tasks and novel methodologies.
  • Apply advanced engineering practices to design work, which is reviewed by senior staff to ensure sound professional judgment.
  • Quality-check, review, and provide input on work produced by junior team members.
  • Support firm marketing efforts to attract new clients and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Represent the project team in client communications and issue resolution.
  • Lead and contribute to the development of electrical plan sets, site layouts, and equipment details.
  • Perform final reviews and obtain professional engineer approval for PV and energy storage electrical designs.
  • Lead and participate in design-focused consulting and PV system modeling initiatives.
  • Supervise contractors and staff on project tasks, supplying technical guidance during execution.
  • Enhance plan-set templates, standards, and best practices.
  • Design equipment layouts, installation details, and single-line diagrams for PV, medium voltage, auxiliary power, and monitoring systems.
  • Coordinate with engineers and sub-consultants as needed.
  • Interface with utilities to coordinate interconnections with licensed engineers.
  • Identify project issues and collaborate with clients and peers to implement effective solutions.
  • Engage with team members, clients, vendors, and installers to create cohesive designs.
  • Generate and interpret Single Line Diagrams for utility interconnection requirements.
  • Conduct electrical studies using SKM, ETAP or similar software.
  • Provide progress updates to Senior Managers on a regular basis and participate in weekly management meetings.
  • Request financial, legal, and technical support as needed and maintain project schedules.
  • Offer time estimates for tasks when appropriate and handle complex assignments within project scopes.
  • Oversee designs through construction and project completion, while maintaining clear communication with engineers, project managers, and clients.
  • Perform field observations to document existing conditions and inform design decisions.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks to deliver designs in a sequential, efficient manner.
  • Complete electrical calculations and produce construction documents aligned with milestone schedules and budgets.
  • Participate in coordination and design meetings as required and define project specifications and cost estimates.
  • Address client and reviewer comments, respond to shop drawings, RFIs, and change orders, and stay within budget constraints.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable codes and competency in AutoCAD and Revit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant Solar PV industry experience.
  • Plans or progress toward Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Experience in medium voltage design and interconnection processes.
  • NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional.
  • High proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with PV system modeling software such as PVsyst, Helioscope, and/or Homer is desirable.
  • Shading analysis capability is highly desirable.
  • Energy storage system design experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong ability to convey technical concepts clearly and to lead a PV design team.
  • Current NCEEES registration or willingness to obtain promptly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated integrity, independence, and teamwork capability.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Partial indoor office setting with variable lighting, noise, and odors
  • Mobility required within an office environment
  • Occasional outdoor work with exposure to weather, noise, and potential hazards
  • Field visits to project sites for accurate condition documentation
  • Ability to travel locally during business hours and occasional out-of-area/overnight trips
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional over-the-shoulder reaching and PPE usage on site
