Job Description

Senior Distribution Engineer 2 - Grid, a role with Sargent & Lundy, supports leadership of distribution design efforts across 4 kV to 34 kV, guides project teams, coordinates with clients, and provides construction support for upstream and midstream oil and gas facilities. The position is based in Charlotte, NC with a hybrid office/remote work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and review construction sketches and details for overhead and underground distribution services in the 4 kV through 34 kV range, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Develop and critique sketches and details for structural analyses associated with projects.
  • Perform short circuit and voltage drop calculations and the related documentation.
  • Prepare and assess bills of materials to support project execution.
  • Prepare and review cost estimates to aid budgeting and planning.
  • Prepare and review traffic control plans or permit drawings as required by the project scope.
  • Collaborate on design efforts with engineers focused on new upstream and midstream oil and gas facilities.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analysis and Design Reviews to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Interface directly with client representatives to address questions related to distribution design.
  • Analyze and design priority feeder configurations and review existing feeds as needed.
  • Support maintenance and recapitalization of distribution components to extend system life.
  • Plan system modifications and oversee complex tasks from concept through implementation.
  • Develop work packages and provide construction support when necessary to meet project milestones.
  • Travel to client and vendor sites for design reviews and to plant locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.
  • Advance professional development through Sargent & Lundy communities of practice and peer learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • Seven or more years of experience in electric utility distribution or related experience capable of reviewing others' work.
  • Proficiency with physical distribution design methods and their practical applications.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and distribution software including AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and PoleForeman.
  • Knowledge of design codes and standards such as NESC, NEC, ANSI, IEEE, and GIS/GWD.
  • Experience leading complex overhead and underground distribution projects from 120/208 V up to 34 kV.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead a project team.

AI and Automation at Sargent & Lundy

  • Lead teams in applying data-driven methods and modern tools, including automation and AI, to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Oversee automation and process-improvement initiatives, such as automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, and generating design documentation, with oversight on when and how AI tools are used.
  • Mentor and coordinate engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB) to automate engineering tasks, including review of automated outputs.
  • Encourage continued learning in computer science, artificial intelligence, or software engineering to support automation-enabled engineering workflows.

Compensation Range

$100,019 - $152,807 per year
