Job Description

Bridger Engineering and Design is seeking a Structural Project Engineer in Zeeland, MI (hybrid) at USD 40 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and design residential structural systems including foundations, floor framing, wall assemblies, roof framing, beams, columns, and lateral-resisting elements.
  • Produce structural calculations, details, and construction documents for custom homes, additions, renovations, accessory structures, and multi‑family developments.
  • Develop structural solutions for open floor plans, large window openings, vaulted ceilings, decks, porches, and specialty architectural features.
  • Assess existing residences and propose repair, reinforcement, and renovation strategies.
  • Perform structural evaluations related to foundation settlement, framing deficiencies, water intrusion, and other concerns.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, local regulations, and accepted engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with homeowners, architects, builders, contractors, and permitting agencies throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assist in developing and finalizing permit and construction documentation.
  • Coordinate structural designs with architectural layouts and project requirements.
  • Participate in project meetings and clearly convey design recommendations.
  • Manage multiple residential projects while upholding quality, schedule, and budget targets.
  • Respond to RFIs and contractor inquiries during construction.
  • Review shop drawings, product submittals, and delegated design elements for compliance with project requirements.
  • Conduct site visits to verify existing conditions and monitor construction progress.
  • Document field observations and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Support builders and homeowners with practical solutions to field-related structural issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • 3 to 6 years of structural engineering experience, preferably in residential or light commercial construction.
  • EIT certification required; PE license or progress toward licensure preferred.
  • Strong understanding of residential structural systems and wood-frame construction.
  • Experience designing foundations, floor systems, roof framing, engineered wood products, and connections.
  • Familiarity with residential building codes and design standards, including IRC, IBC, ASCE 7, AWC NDS, and local codes.
  • Proficiency with structural software such as RISA Suite, ENERCALC, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to evaluate existing homes and formulate practical repair solutions.
  • Knowledge of residential construction methods, permitting processes, and field practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • High proficiency in Revit for design and modeling.
