Job Description

A Transportation Engineer 3 position with the State of Ohio's Transportation District 11 places you at the heart of bridge and structural project design from the Akron area. This role involves in-house design work for complex transportation projects, with project management responsibilities within District 11 and reporting to the District 4 Headquarters in Akron. The position offers an hourly pay range of $40 to $57 and requires onsite presence in Akron.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee plan development for multiple complex transportation projects, blending in-house and consultant designs through preliminary engineering and detailed design for bridge and structure projects within District 11.
  • actively manage project scope, budget, and on-schedule delivery to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Lead and facilitate meetings to address engineering, NEPA, budget, and other factors that impact project delivery and cost.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, local agencies, and internal staff to align goals and requirements.

Requirements

  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience interacting with the public and local officials.
  • Licensed as a registered professional engineer by the Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; either:
    • 12 months of experience as a group or project leader providing work direction and training to engineering technicians and/or lower-level engineers, or 12 months of experience conducting engineering-related research; OR
    • 12 months of experience as Transportation Engineer 2 (code 85642); OR
    • equivalent to the minimum class qualifications noted above, with the registration remaining mandatory.
  • If operating a state vehicle to travel to and inspect project sites, possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Field of study: Civil Engineering.

Supplemental Information

  • New hires within the bargaining unit and exempt positions must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • This role is overtime exempt per FLSA standards.
  • Internal hires will have wage determinations in line with the Ohio Revised Code (Exempt E-1 only).
  • The position is designated as a Career Professional role under Ohio Revised Code 5501.20.
