Job Description

Join Sargent & Lundy in Richland, WA for a hybrid role that blends hands-on automation engineering with mentorship and client-facing travel. You will lead the design of PLC based control systems and Safety Instrumented Systems, guide multi-discipline project teams, and grow through formal training and peer learning communities. The position offers a competitive salary range of USD 118,023 to 180,313 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package and flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with multi-discipline project teams to design new PLC based control systems, Safety Instrumented Systems, and other industrial control platforms
Prepare specifications and design media for procurement and implementation of software, instrumentation, and control system platforms
Enhance expertise through mentoring, classroom-style technical sessions, and on-the-job training in the Automation Lab
Grow your career through peer learning within Sargent & Lundy’s process networks and Communities of Practice
Travel to client offices and project sites as required

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify
Ability to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance
BS degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program; MS degree preferred
10+ years of progressively responsible experience in instrumentation and controls or automation and control systems engineering
Proven ability to interface with craft for troubleshooting and problem solving
Experience designing, programming, documenting, and/or testing automated machinery or processes at industrial facilities
Experience with industrial communication design (Ethernet IP preferred; familiarity with Modbus and Profibus is a plus)
Experience producing P&IDs, Control System Narratives, I/O Lists, Cause and Effect or Logic Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Factory Acceptance Test Procedures, and software documentation including O&M manuals

Job Description

Based in Richland, Washington, Sargent & Lundy seeks a seasoned lead electrical engineer to guide a project team responsible for the design, modification, and analysis of electrical systems across nuclear materials processing, waste treatment, storage and disposal, and commercial nuclear power facilities. The position features a hybrid work arrangement and includes mentorship responsibilities to support the development of less experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

Serve as the electrical team lead coordinating detailed design phases across all aspects of electrical engineering work.
Direct efforts to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
Coordinate system design activities to ensure installations and operations meet specifications, codes, and client requirements.
Develop and review detailed electrical calculations such as arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting analyses.
Create design input documentation to support drawing production, including master diagrams and master schematics.
Interface with vendors to develop material and equipment purchase specifications aligned with client recommendations.
Produce reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely, meeting client requirements and S&L formats.
Conduct independent reviews of others' calculations and drawings.
Support professional growth through peer learning and knowledge sharing within S&L’s processes and Communities of Practice.
Provide mentoring to less experienced engineers.

Requirements

Ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance.
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; Master of Science in Electrical Engineering preferred.
Willingness to pursue Professional Engineer licensure.
Eligibility to obtain a Department of Energy Q level clearance.
More than ten years of experience designing electrical systems in a project-team environment, ideally in commercial power, DOE, nuclear Navy, or NNSA, focusing on integrated, detailed system design for new facilities or modifications to existing plants.
Experience selecting equipment and materials, defining control philosophy, and preparing and assembling calculations and specifications.
Experience in electrical system design including low voltage distribution (transformers, generators, motors), communications systems, equipment selection, and analytical calculations.
At least three years of experience leading an engineering design team through all project design phases.
Strong knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems to support system design.
Experience serving as a liaison between the firm and clients in a support or lead engineering role.
Experience reviewing design drawings prepared by others.
U.S. citizen; dual citizenship with a non-U.S. country is not eligible.
