Job Description

Based in Richland, Washington, Sargent & Lundy seeks a seasoned lead electrical engineer to guide a project team responsible for the design, modification, and analysis of electrical systems across nuclear materials processing, waste treatment, storage and disposal, and commercial nuclear power facilities. The position features a hybrid work arrangement and includes mentorship responsibilities to support the development of less experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the electrical team lead coordinating detailed design phases across all aspects of electrical engineering work.
  • Direct efforts to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
  • Coordinate system design activities to ensure installations and operations meet specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Develop and review detailed electrical calculations such as arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting analyses.
  • Create design input documentation to support drawing production, including master diagrams and master schematics.
  • Interface with vendors to develop material and equipment purchase specifications aligned with client recommendations.
  • Produce reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely, meeting client requirements and S&L formats.
  • Conduct independent reviews of others' calculations and drawings.
  • Support professional growth through peer learning and knowledge sharing within S&L’s processes and Communities of Practice.
  • Provide mentoring to less experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; Master of Science in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Willingness to pursue Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Department of Energy Q level clearance.
  • More than ten years of experience designing electrical systems in a project-team environment, ideally in commercial power, DOE, nuclear Navy, or NNSA, focusing on integrated, detailed system design for new facilities or modifications to existing plants.
  • Experience selecting equipment and materials, defining control philosophy, and preparing and assembling calculations and specifications.
  • Experience in electrical system design including low voltage distribution (transformers, generators, motors), communications systems, equipment selection, and analytical calculations.
  • At least three years of experience leading an engineering design team through all project design phases.
  • Strong knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems to support system design.
  • Experience serving as a liaison between the firm and clients in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings prepared by others.
  • U.S. citizen; dual citizenship with a non-U.S. country is not eligible.

AI and Automation at Sargent & Lundy

  • Lead teams from problem to solution by setting expectations for data driven approaches and the use of automation and AI to streamline workflows and deliver cost effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process improvement efforts, including automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, and generating design documentation, while defining how AI or agentic AI tools are used and ensuring results are verified.
  • Oversee engineers who program or script in Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
  • Encourage additional learning in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or related fields to support oversight of AI enabled engineering workflows.
