Area Director of Engineering
Job Description
Based in Houston, TX onsite, this role leads the hotel's engineering division, coordinating administrative, financial, and operational activities to safeguard safety and profitability while collaborating with senior and corporate leadership and ownership on capital expenditure projects and reporting to the General Manager.
Responsibilities
- Provide consistently professional, courteous, and engaging service to guests and colleagues.
- Maintain clear, proactive communication with other departments and keep relevant teams informed of issue status and progress.
- Direct the daily operations of the Maintenance department and ensure compliance with standards across engineering and maintenance activities.
- Supervise and train engineering staff in customer service, empowerment, standard operating procedures, and loss prevention policies.
- Develop, approve, and publish engineering staff schedules in line with hotel standards.
- Oversee ongoing maintenance, repairs and preventive maintenance to enhance efficiency, profitability and service quality.
- Coordinate renovations and capital projects, supervising external contractors as needed.
- Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget, monitor monthly variances, assume P&L responsibility for the department, and assist with capital planning.
- Develop and refine a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for guest rooms and equipment, integrated into a facilities management software for work orders and scheduled maintenance.
- Adhere to purchasing procedures for inventory and maintain physical stock levels per the maintenance plan, including contingencies for emergencies.
- Ensure compliance with all government regulations related to building codes, health, fire and life safety programs.
- Review service contracts to ensure high performance and competitive pricing.
- Monitor energy and water management programs to optimize utility usage and cost efficiency.
- Participate actively in energy conservation and safety initiatives.
- Balance operational demands, administrative tasks, and guest needs.
- Adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Follow all safety policies.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations and general maintenance skills required.
- Heavy lifting ability: capable of occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds; frequently up to 50 pounds; constant up to 20 pounds.
- Travel related to company business sometimes required.
- Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times.
- Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and guests in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service-oriented manner.
- Must listen well, understand, and address concerns raised by employees and guests.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.

- Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Hyatt Hotel Standards, as scheduling requires.
- Comply with Hotel Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.
- Maximize productivity, identify problem areas and assist in implementing solutions.
- Must be effective in handling problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying and solving problems as necessary.
- Must be able to understand and evaluate complex information, data, etc. from various sources to meet appropriate objectives.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Flexible availability: weekends and nights may be asked when projects or repairs require the DOE to be present.
