Job Description
The Chief Engineer at Sheraton Lisle Naperville Hotel oversees the ongoing maintenance and operation of the property's physical plant, ensuring reliable performance of structural, mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems while prioritizing energy efficiency and preventive maintenance across guest and back-of-house areas.
Responsibilities
- Perform regular walk-throughs to verify the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the building structure and all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and related equipment.
- Ensure completion of scheduled maintenance in public spaces, meeting rooms, ballrooms, outlets, back-of-house areas, and grounds; verify repairs, replacements, and renovations to offices and employee work areas.
- Assist in recruiting, training, supervising, and disciplining Engineering Department staff and related personnel such as painters, upholsterers, and groundskeepers.
- Comply with corporate purchasing policies and controls, including contractor bids, budgets, and schedules; uphold prescribed safety procedures for personnel and equipment per company standards and OSHA.
- Maintain effective Energy Management and Preventive Maintenance programs and provide specialized training to other operating departments on safe and efficient use of equipment and energy in the hotel.
Requirements
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and understanding the primary workplace language; strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to lead a team and collaborate in a largely team-based environment.
- Basic computational ability and computer skills; familiarity with computer accounting programs and budget analysis.
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, water softeners, and refrigeration equipment; strong understanding of plumbing and electrical systems and the ability to maintain records of power, water, and fuel consumption.
- Experience with office procedures, material procurement, bid management, and knowledge of city codes and other applicable building regulations; experience with blueprint reading and building construction concepts.
OB SUMMARY
The role centers on maintaining the entire hotel facility, including the structure and all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and related equipment, in alignment with energy conservation and preventive maintenance programs. The position also ensures the upkeep of guest areas to preserve an attractive hotel environment.
Supportive Functions
- Supervise essential repairs and maintenance activities across the hotel.
- Prepare technical data, bidding documents, project plans, alterations, and repairs; maintain basic knowledge of building codes.
- Provide ongoing training in fire prevention, environmental health and safety, and engineering systems; participate in department, fire, safety, health, and quality improvement meetings.
- Oversee daily and weekly payroll processes and develop departmental manpower schedules.
- Supervise water treatment programs and participate in morning walk-around procedures as required.
Physical Demands
- Most tasks are conducted indoors with climate control; may encounter extreme temperatures in areas such as freezers (-10F) and kitchens (+110F) for up to one hour or more.
- Ability to stand and move with steady pace for up to 4 hours; navigate confined spaces and travel to various hotel locations as needed.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and stretch to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks; reach required locations promptly.
- Lift up to 50 lbs regularly, with occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs; frequent bending, squatting, and lifting required.
- Work may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical hazards, heights, heat, chemicals, fumes, dust, and poor ventilation; risk factors include oils and cutting fluids.
- Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, listening, and visual acuity; must maintain manual dexterity to operate equipment and office devices.
Availability
The property operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The position generally follows a Monday through Friday schedule, with hours varying based on business demand. At times, shifts may include weekends or alternate hours as required by tasks or business needs.
