Civil Field Engineer
Job Description
Wagner Ranch Services, a civil site-work contractor, relies on precise field coordination to keep projects progressing smoothly. The Civil Field Engineer will be on site in Sheridan, Wyoming, linking layout with the survey team, tracking quantities and daily progress, and maintaining clear as-built records and field documentation. This part-time role combines hands-on field presence with technical reporting to support efficient construction execution.
Position Summary
Wagner Ranch Services (WRS) performs civil site-work including excavation, utilities, grading, road building, and related infrastructure. The Civil Field Engineer supports project execution by coordinating with the Surveyor/PM for layout, tracking quantities and progress, maintaining as-builts, and providing organized field documentation that helps crews stay productive and minimizes rework. The role blends field presence with technical and documentation responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Safety & Jobsite Awareness — Adhere to all safety requirements, maintain strong situational awareness around equipment and traffic, participate in daily planning, and communicate hazards or conflicts (utilities, slopes, public interface, etc.).
- Layout Support & Survey Coordination — Coordinate daily/weekly layout needs with the Surveyor/PM (staking requests, control, grade checks, verification); assist with field layout as needed (limited staking, offsets, grade references, simple points) to support progress; verify critical line/grade and key dimensions before work proceeds to avoid rework.
- Quantity Tracking & Production Reporting — Track installed quantities for earthwork, utilities, structures, base/aggregate, and concrete/asphalt prep as applicable; maintain daily production tracking (planned vs actual) and provide updates to the PM/Superintendent; support pay item tracking and internal production metrics.
- As-Builts, Photos & Field Documentation — Maintain redlines/as-builts throughout construction (utility locations, depths, material substitutions, field adjustments); capture and organize job photos and key documentation for progress, issues, and closeout; compile and maintain test results and tickets/logs (density tests, concrete tickets, delivery tickets, etc. as applicable).
- Plans, Revisions, and RFI Support — Maintain current plan sets and ensure the field is working from the latest revisions; identify conflicts, missing details, and constructability issues; help draft RFIs and communicate to the PM; assist with spec compliance in the field (materials verification, installation requirements).
- Quality Control & Rework Prevention — Support quality checks and verification before critical activities (subgrade acceptance, trench depth/bedding, compaction readiness, fine grade checks); coordinate required inspections and testing with third parties and project team; surface quality concerns early and help drive corrective action.
- Change Management Support (T&M / Change Conditions) — Identify differing site conditions or scope growth early (unsuitable soils, undercut, plan conflicts, access changes); document changes with quantities, notes, photos, and supporting data for T&M/CO backup.
- Communication & Coordination — Coordinate daily with the superintendent/foreman on priorities, constraints, and upcoming work; communicate clearly with the Surveyor/PM and PM regarding layout needs, schedule impacts, and issues; represent WRS professionally with inspectors, engineers, owners, and subcontractors as directed.
