Packaging Engineer
Job Description
The Packaging Engineer will design and develop packaging solutions for new product launches and production improvements at Royal Technologies, focusing on cost reduction and continuous improvement. This onsite role is based in Hudsonville, MI.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with business units, financial managers, launch teams, suppliers, and logistics to develop and manage costs for packing opportunities tied to potential new business awards
- Design, develop, and test packaging solutions for product launches, changes, and production enhancements that align with zero defect objectives and low product cost
- Interface with clients to determine and formulate packaging solutions that meet manufacturing, quality, and cost objectives
- Create and maintain precise packaging documentation, including Customer Packaging Portals, Customer Packaging Data Sheets, internal Packaging Reference Sheets, and Bills of Material (BOMs)
- Design and implement returnable packaging solutions, determine fleet size requirements, and manage manufacturing and logistics demands to sustain a stable flow of returnable packaging
- Work cross-functionally with Royal Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to ensure production methods are integrated into packaging design
- Participate in the selection of external vendors to achieve cost, timeline, and quality objectives
- Apply 8D problem solving techniques to troubleshoot and resolve packaging issues
- Lead cost reduction initiatives with customers, manufacturing locations, and packaging vendors
- Continuously enhance packaging standards to improve quality and reduce cost
- Travel less than 10%
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in packaging engineering or a related engineering field, highly preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Packaging Engineer at an Automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier, required
- Preferred experience includes product launch activities from quoting through SOP, involving collaboration with packaging vendors and final customers
- Proven experience developing novel packaging designs, overseeing packaging fabrication processes, and managing returnable packaging systems in a manufacturing environment
- Ability to work with minimal direction and to consult with customers, delivering strong communication, project management, and customer service
- Proficiency in creating comprehensive packaging design documentation and navigating complex automotive customer requirements, including expertise with Customer Packaging Portals, Customer Data Sheets, Packaging Instructions, rigorous testing protocols, and control plans
