Role overview
We are seeking a seasoned geotechnical engineering leader to provide technical support, project oversight, and strategic guidance. The position blends advanced technical expertise with project leadership and client engagement. The successful candidate will collaborate with company leadership and senior technical staff to guide geotechnical investigations that align with client objectives and project priorities. This role offers the chance to establish and grow SPC’s geotechnical services as a new department within a rapidly expanding consulting firm. The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will influence technical standards, support project delivery, and help build the team as the service line expands. This position is based in Rolling Meadows, Illinois (ZIP code 60008).
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Lead and supervise subsurface investigations, including defining scope, staffing, schedules, and technical approach
- Direct field operations such as boring programs, site investigations, sampling, and field testing
- Review and interpret geotechnical data, delivering senior-level evaluations and design guidance for foundations, earthwork, and site development
- Prepare, review, and approve geotechnical reports
- Serve as the primary technical contact for clients, contractors, regulators, and the SPC team
- Oversee project documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Lead project planning activities including scheduling, task coordination, and budget oversight
- Support and contribute to proposal development, scope definition, and technical strategy
- Ensure compliance with safety programs, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements
- Provide strategic input on project delivery, operational improvements, and technical recommendations
- Apply advanced geotechnical engineering methods to enhance infrastructure project performance and outcomes
- Mentor and guide entry-level engineers and field staff
- Perform additional leadership and technical responsibilities as needed to support team success and business objectives
Position requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
- 15+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- 10 years in a project management role
- Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, site characterization, and geotechnical laboratory testing
- Positive client relation skills
- Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Solid reasoning and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
