Job Description
Wellabe Services Co is hiring a Software Engineer 3 for a hybrid role in Des Moines, IA. This position focuses on building and evolving complex software solutions across the lifecycle, with a strong emphasis on secure, scalable, and maintainable delivery. You will also have the opportunity to apply AI-assisted development and contribute to modern architecture patterns while mentoring engineers and shaping technical direction.
What you’ll do
- Design and implement cost-effective enhancements and new capabilities for complex applications, services, and processes by analyzing business and technical requirements and investigating problem areas.
- Support the software development lifecycle through performance monitoring and review, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and leading code reviews.
- Contribute to DevOps practices for complex designs and prototypes, including automation initiatives, test plans, deployment strategies, and program specifications.
- Partner with product owners, software engineers, system engineers, architects, and testers to identify requirements, reduce technical debt, and improve operational efficiency, system reliability, and business outcomes.
- Help evolve application and system architecture to align with enterprise standards, security requirements, and long-term strategy.
- Use test environments and automated testing tools and test cases to prototype, validate, and improve software solutions.
- Drive engineering efficiencies by contributing to coding standards, development practices, tools, automation opportunities, and emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development capabilities.
- Evaluate and help implement modern software engineering technologies, frameworks, and AI-enabled practices that improve productivity, quality, and maintainability.
- Document programs, processes, procedures, technical designs, and implementation details according to department standards.
- Lead technical initiatives through mentorship: train, coach, and support software engineers by delegating responsibilities and providing technical guidance and educational opportunities.
- Provide technical leadership in the design and responsible use of AI-enabled solutions, including retrieval-based knowledge access, intelligent automation, agentic architecture patterns, and secure development practices.
What you bring
- 5+ years of related progressive experience in development and systems analysis.
- Experience with at least 1–3 coding languages, with C# and SQL preferred.
- Experience in project management.
- Advanced knowledge of software engineering principles, practices, methodologies, and programming languages, including C#, .NET/.NET Core, SQL, LINQ, and Blazor (additional: Python, JavaScript, Angular is optional).
- Advanced knowledge of system design, software architecture, application integration patterns, development tools, cloud technologies, and data processing concepts and terminology.
- Depending on team:
- Web development team: ASP.NET, iOS Development, Web Services (WCF, RESTful, Web API), MAUI/Xamarin, LINQ, WPF and MVVM patterns, Windows desktop, mobile and browser-based development, web services support, Microsoft DevOps, Agile Development, iOS deployment process, GitHub, Android Development, Cloud Development, containerized deployment, and Data Analytics and/or AI.
- Policy administration development team: .NET, COBOL, Microsoft DevOps, Git, GitHub Copilot and/or Microsoft 365 Copilot or equivalent.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify complex issues, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions.
- Ability to lead technical initiatives, manage projects, facilitate cross-team collaboration, and influence technical direction.
AI and architecture alignment (strong preference)
- Working knowledge of AI application architecture including large language models, vector databases, semantic search, prompt engineering, and agent-to-agent communication patterns.
- Ability to evaluate AI technologies and recommend architectures, frameworks, implementation patterns, and governance considerations based on business and technical requirements.
- Experience designing and implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions, including knowledge retrieval, vector search, grounding strategies, and prompt orchestration.
- Experience architecting, developing, and supporting Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and integrations enabling AI agents to securely access enterprise systems and data sources.
- Experience designing and optimizing agentic workflows using platforms such as Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Copilot Studio, or similar orchestration toolsets.
- Experience leveraging AI-assisted development methodologies and toolchains to accelerate code generation, testing, documentation, debugging, and solution design.
