Software Engineer - Industrial Systems

Sun Automation is seeking a Software Engineer - Industrial Systems (onsite) in Glen Arm, MD to build a next-generation HMI for corrugated systems using Siemens Unified Architecture.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement a responsive, real-time HMI using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Develop backend services in Python for data acquisition, processing, and API layers.
• Architect and deliver reliable PLC communication with Siemens PLCs via OPC UA.
• Build and maintain scalable, fault-tolerant cloud systems, leveraging Elixir for concurrency-heavy components (where applicable).
• Work with controls engineers to translate machine recipes into operator-friendly interface elements.
• Implement real-time data streaming, alerting, and visualization capabilities.
• Drive reliability, observability, and performance for industrial deployments.
• Contribute to deployment pipelines and edge/on-premises system architecture.
• Maintain clear documentation and participate in code reviews.

Requirements

• React required with strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Backend experience required in Python or C++ for robust services.
• Hands-on OPC UA experience required, including client/server work, data modeling, and security.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, networking, and API design.
• Experience with industrial automation systems, PLCs, or SCADA/HMI platforms required.
• Familiarity with asynchronous programming and real-time data handling required.
• Ability to debug complex hardware-software interactions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Siemens PLCs (for example, S7 series, TIA Portal ecosystem).
• Exposure to Elixir/Erlang or other high-concurrency, fault-tolerant systems.
• Knowledge of industrial protocols beyond OPC UA (for example, Modbus, Profinet).
• Experience deploying software to edge devices or on-prem industrial environments.
• Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
• Understanding of cybersecurity practices for industrial networks.

Compensation

USD 90,000 - 125,000 per yearly.
