Software Engineer, Payments

WEX Inc. is hiring a Software Engineer for Payments to support the WEX Bill Pay platform inside the Corporate Payments Engineering organization. In this onsite role in New York, NY, you will help shape the team’s long-term direction while building scalable services that run in the cloud.

The position focuses on architectural planning, event-driven systems, and database-driven integrations. Work will emphasize durable design, reliable delivery, and continuous improvement across cross-cutting and core Corporate Payments services.

What you’ll do

• Help develop, drive, and execute the long-term vision and strategy for Corporate Payments cross-cutting and core services.
• Collaboratively define and implement the architectural roadmap for the Bill Pay platform, aligning with business objectives, industry best practices, and other Corporate Payments engineering teams.
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable Java and Spring Boot applications running on AWS Cloud.
• Build and enhance event-driven services using Apache Kafka.
• Develop and maintain database solutions using PostgreSQL and Oracle, including SQL development and Oracle stored procedures.
• Support a team culture centered on innovation, collaboration, empowerment, and continuous learning.
• Challenge the status quo and implement engineering practices that reduce time-to-market while maintaining quality and reliability.
• Collaborate with other Corporate Payments engineering teams to reuse development practices, services, and components and reduce duplication.

Required qualifications

• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong experience developing applications with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience developing and deploying applications on AWS Cloud.
• Experience building event-driven applications using Apache Kafka.
• Experience developing and supporting applications using PostgreSQL and Oracle Database, including Oracle stored procedures and SQL optimization.
• Experience writing high-quality automated tests, including unit, component, and integration tests, with knowledge of the test pyramid.
• Strong understanding of software design principles, security, and compliance requirements in cloud and data environments.
• Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and technical communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, agile environment with changing priorities.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience building applications in the financial services or payments industry, including bill pay, credit card, accounts receivable, or accounts payable solutions.
• Experience developing cloud-native SaaS applications.
• Experience working with geographically distributed engineering teams.

Compensation and work details

• Salary: USD 96,100 - 115,500 per year
• Minimum experience: 2 years
