Structural Engineer

Leake engineering LLC is seeking a Project Structural Engineer to help drive structural engineering work from early assessment through construction. The position supports projects spanning commercial, residential, institutional, and governmental sectors, with periodic field work across the Philadelphia area.

This full-time role blends design, technical documentation, and cross-discipline coordination in a hybrid environment based in Philadelphia, PA. The selected engineer will also contribute during construction through site visits, assessments, and on-site problem solving.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with structural analysis and design for building and structural systems, including gravity and lateral load-resisting systems.
• Lead structural engineering projects from proposal through construction.
• Prepare structural calculations, engineering reports, design narratives, and technical documentation in accordance with applicable building codes and industry standards.
• Develop and review structural drawings and details using AutoCAD, coordinating with architectural, civil, geotechnical, and MEP disciplines.
• Conduct site visits, structural assessments, existing-condition evaluations, construction observations, and field investigations.
• Create practical, cost-effective structural solutions for renovations, adaptive reuse projects, and existing buildings.
• Provide on-site support during construction by addressing field conditions, contractor questions, RFIs, and unforeseen structural issues.
• Support preservation and rehabilitation of existing and historic structures through thoughtful engineering solutions.
• Coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies throughout project execution.
• Coordinate with the City of Philadelphia Department of Licenses & Inspections (L&I) and other local agencies to support permitting, plan review, and regulatory approvals.
• Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs for conformance with design intent.
• Assist with quality control reviews to support accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
• Support project schedules, task tracking, budgeting, and internal project coordination.
• Attend client meetings, coordination meetings, and internal design reviews.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and engineering staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
• 5–7 years of structural engineering design or consulting experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
• Working knowledge of structural analysis and design software.
• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD.
• Experience designing structures utilizing steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
• Experience evaluating existing buildings, renovations, adaptive reuse projects, and structural modifications.
• Familiarity with applicable building codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, and related design standards.
• Experience communicating effectively with clients, contractors, architects, and municipal agencies throughout project development.
• Knowledge of Philadelphia permitting processes and experience coordinating with the City of Philadelphia Department of Licenses & Inspections (L&I) is preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects while working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

• Hybrid remote in Philadelphia, PA 19103.
• Ability to commute: Philadelphia, PA 19103 (Required).
• Ability to relocate: Philadelphia, PA 19103 (Preferred).
• Willingness to travel: 25% (Required).

Job Details

• Job type: Full-time
• Salary range: $90,000–$100,000 per year (based on qualifications and experience)
• Compensation: Overtime pay; yearly bonus
• Work environment: Primarily work-from-home with periodic field work and site visits required. Proximity to the Philadelphia area is needed for site inspections, client meetings, construction observations, and coordination with local agencies.
