Structural Professional Engineer

The McKissack Group, Inc. is seeking a Structural Professional Engineer to support the School District Office of Capital Programs with structural design development, structural analysis, and building code compliance for capital projects across existing educational facilities in Philadelphia.

Role Overview

This position focuses on leading structural efforts from early scope development through construction support. The Engineer will work onsite at existing school buildings and associated support facilities, including collaboration with School District departments such as Facilities, Maintenance and Environmental Services.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop scope for Capital Projects, including inspection, assessment, preliminary design, and preparation of the formal scope determination report
• Select and manage outside design consultants, including preparing RFPs, approving design proposals, performing technical review of design documentation, and approving payment
• Execute permitting, advertisement, and bidding activities, including preparing bid specifications, meeting prospective contractors, and coordinating through L&I and other agencies
• Provide structural design support during construction
• Complete inspections and issue assessment reports and directives to other School District departments, including Facilities, Maintenance and Environmental Services
• Apply design and assessment experience for low- to midrise commercial structures using concrete, steel, and masonry, including both shallow and deep foundations
• Maintain working knowledge of building envelope systems, both current and historical (1900-present), including roof systems, cavity walls, mass masonry walls, and terra cotta
• Use working knowledge of building codes (City of Philadelphia, IBC) and material codes (AISC, ACI)
• Apply experience with the Building Permit process in the City of Philadelphia
• Write technical documents for construction professionals and communicate technical concepts to professionals and decision makers outside the industry
• Self-perform design and documentation for smaller structural projects, such as small facade repairs and mechanical dunnage
• Use Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Adobe Suite, and AutoCAD to support design and project delivery

Typical Project Experience

Projects may include building envelope restoration, structural repairs and/or modifications (either standalone or as part of interior fit-out and new M/E/P systems), and building additions.

Additional work areas may include storm water management systems, site erosion and sedimentation, site surveys, drainage systems, retaining wall repairs and reconstruction, and site lighting and site utilities.

Support may also extend to building-level system replacements and classroom modification scopes, including boiler/chiller plant replacement, fire alarm systems, electrical service, re-lighting, emergency generator and elevator replacements, and new HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering
• Professional Engineer's License in Pennsylvania
• Minimum 7 years of paid professional experience in school buildings and facilities design, construction and assessment
• Master's degree preferred

Reporting Structure

The Engineer will report to the Design Manager and support the School District Office of Capital Programs.

Compensation

USD 120,000 - 140,000 per year
