Building Structural Engineer – Technical Lead
Job Description
This onsite role in Charlotte, NC, with Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. is for an experienced Building Structural Engineer to act as the technical lead on multidisciplinary building and facility projects across the East Coast. The position oversees the design process from framing and layout through construction administration, delivering scope, schedule, and budget while advising junior engineers.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary design team to support structural engineering efforts on projects.
- Lead the structural team in framing layout, design calculations, and detailing to produce reports and construction documents.
- Develop construction documents using Revit.
- Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, utilizing design software and drawing tools.
- Prepare engineering documents for bidding and construction phases.
- Coordinate with internal and external team members to meet defined deadlines and maintain quality standards.
- Develop and sustain project specific quality plans.
- Oversee and manage assigned staff working on the project.
- Manage all technical resources on the project team.
- Support Office Managers and Practice Leaders with marketing proposals.
- Develop and coordinate the structural project scope within technical proposals.
- Participate in client presentations.
- Provide leadership and continuous performance management, including setting expectations and goals, giving feedback, conducting one-on-one meetings, and coaching to support team growth and development.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of structural engineering experience.
- Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
- Proficiency in discipline-specific design codes, references, and software for structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber.
- Knowledge of Revit or a willingness to learn Revit.
- Exposure to finite element modeling or building systems analysis programs (RAM, RISA, ETABS, or SAP2000).
- General knowledge of building construction materials and construction processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

- Ability to function effectively as a team member within a broader group.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a general office environment approximately 95 percent of the time and is typically sedentary. Occasional standing and walking may be required, with standard lighting and temperature and no significant hazards from noise or dust. Field work is possible on occasion, potentially outdoors in heat, cold, wet or dry conditions. Some lifting up to 25 pounds may be necessary.
