CMM Programming & Metrology Engineer
Job Description
The CMM Programming & Metrology Engineer role at Isembard is responsible for establishing enterprise inspection methodologies and standardizing dimensional measurement practices across the manufacturing network. This position combines technical GD&T leadership with hands-on CMM programming and metrology governance, including training and mentorship.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain enterprise standards for CMM programming, dimensional inspection, and metrology.
- Define standardized workflows for inspection planning, program development, validation, approval, and revision control.
- Create repeatable programming standards deployable across all Isembard manufacturing locations.
- Establish best practices for first article inspection, production verification, capability studies, and process validation.
- Standardize metrology processes, work instructions, and inspection documentation across the network.
- Develop, validate, and optimize CMM programs using Modus and other leading CMM software platforms.
- Plan inspections using CAD models, engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and customer specifications.
- Build highly automated, repeatable inspection programs to reduce operator intervention while improving measurement reliability.
- Validate measurement uncertainty and ensure inspection repeatability and reproducibility.
- Support new product introduction through inspection planning and measurement strategy development.
- Act as the organizational technical expert for ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Interpret complex engineering drawings and translate functional requirements into effective inspection strategies.
- Provide GD&T guidance to engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
- Create internal training materials and standards to strengthen organizational GD&T competency.
- Maintain enterprise inspection libraries, programming templates, and reusable measurement routines.
- Evaluate and standardize metrology equipment, software, and inspection technologies across the network.
- Support new manufacturing site deployment by building dimensional inspection capability and training local personnel.
- Drive metrology governance, including program review, approval, validation, and periodic verification.
- Analyze dimensional inspection results and provide recommendations to support manufacturing process improvement.
- Support root cause investigations related to dimensional nonconformances.
- Ensure CMM systems remain calibrated, maintained, and capable for measurement system requirements.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance, calibration activities, software updates, and hardware support.
- Lead initiatives to improve inspection efficiency, repeatability, and measurement capability.
- Evaluate emerging metrology technologies including optical scanning, vision systems, laser measurement, structured light, and automated inspection.
- Support statistical process control and measurement system analysis (MSA).
- Promote Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement within inspection operations.
- Mentor CMM programmers, inspectors, and quality personnel; deliver training on CMM programming, inspection methodology, and GD&T.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Metrology, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 5 years of advanced CMM programming experience in a precision manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing complex automated CMM inspection programs.
- Strong working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Experience supporting aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated manufacturing industries.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 25% to support network deployment and standardization.

Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive experience programming Renishaw Modus.
- Experience with PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, NX CMM, Calypso, or similar programming platforms.
- Experience with Renishaw REVO systems and fixed scanning probe technologies.
- GDTP (Y14.5) Technologist or Senior Certification preferred.
- Experience using CAD software such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks, or CATIA.
- Experience developing standardized inspection methodologies across multiple manufacturing locations.
- Experience establishing enterprise metrology or quality systems.
- Strong understanding of Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gauge R&R, uncertainty analysis, and statistical methods.
- Experience implementing AS9100 quality management systems.
- Knowledge of machining processes including milling, turning, grinding, and additive manufacturing.
- Familiarity with SPC, capability analysis, and advanced quality tools.

Compensation
USD 80,000 - 160,000 per yearly. Competitive based on experience. Pay range also listed as $80,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year.
