Job Description

Mechanical Service Corporation is seeking an experienced HVAC Design Engineer to lead design/build and retrofit project development for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. The role emphasizes creating bespoke mechanical solutions, evaluating field conditions, producing thorough design documentation, and delivering precise estimates. This onsite position in New Jersey offers a salary range of USD 140,000 to 160,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site surveys of existing mechanical systems to determine condition, scope, and project requirements.
  • Develop original HVAC and process cooling designs for commercial, industrial, and institutional settings, including independent scoping where plans or specifications are absent.
  • Perform load calculations and size equipment using industry-standard software.
  • Select and specify equipment and systems, including air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, piping, controls, and related components.
  • Produce design drawings, schematics, and supporting documentation sufficient to define scope and support installation.
  • Prepare detailed project estimates covering equipment, materials, and labor costs.
  • Develop clear, professional proposals tailored to direct-to-owner sales opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to present and refine proposals as needed.
  • Transition awarded projects to operations and field teams with thorough documentation and handoff.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to field and office teams during project execution.
  • Conduct site visits as required to verify conditions and support installation activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent combination of technical education and field experience.
  • 5 to 10 years of HVAC design/build experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional environments.
  • Proven ability to develop mechanical system solutions in the absence of existing plans or specifications.
  • Proficiency with load calculation and equipment selection software, such as HAP, Trace 700, or equivalent.
  • Experience generating design drawings using CAD or similar tools.
  • Strong estimating capabilities with the ability to quantify equipment, materials, and labor accurately.
  • Solid knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE and local mechanical codes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Resourceful, self-directed, and able to manage multiple priorities concurrently.
  • Professional Engineer license is a plus, but not required.
