Overview
Position: Senior Mechanical Engineer in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Location: Fort Thomas, Kentucky 41075. Reports To: Service Group Director and Director of Mechanical Engineering. This role focuses on designing mechanical solutions for new and existing complex plants and systems, high rise design, smoke control systems, and hybrid plants. The engineer will lead design and development of mechanical engineering solutions and coordinate closely with other disciplines. The role also involves mentoring staff, reviewing engineering drawings, teaching topics within the department, and driving design efficiency. Plumbing and fire protection knowledge and familiarity with their design are advantageous.
Core Competencies and Responsibilities
- Perform detailed mechanical surveys.
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to deliver projects from design inception to construction closeout.
- Lead multiple project types through design to construction closeout.
- Review mechanical designs.
- Conduct Construction Administration including site observation reports, punch lists, submittals, and RFI responses.
- Troubleshoot complex field mechanical issues.
- Research and prepare mechanical engineering reports for feasibility studies, life cycle analysis, and similar analyses.
- Engage with clients to discuss complex mechanical engineering principles used in design.
- Participate in business development activities.
- Project performance: complete engineering tasks within the project budget and schedule; provide feedback to supervisors, project managers, and principals related to project performance; address change orders and prepare responses to clients; estimate required engineering hours and prepare corresponding engineering fees.
- Supervisory responsibilities may be assigned, with engineers or co-op staff under supervision as directed by studio directors.
Technical Capabilities
- Apply hydronic piping engineering principles to systems providing condenser water, geothermal, chilled water, hot water, steam, and refrigerant.
- Apply design principles for hydronic systems and plants.
- Understand building pressure and stack effect and engineer systems to address building pressure including life safety systems for hoist way and stairwell pressurization and smoke control.
- Create and interpret all aspects of single line diagrams.
- Develop engineering sketches or schematics, layouts, details and drawings.
- Reference and apply applicable codes.
- Apply SMACNA standards to ductwork pressure classes and types.
- Edit mechanical specifications.
- Perform advanced building, system, and plant level HVAC calculations for complicated systems.
- Research and prepare reports for feasibility studies, life cycle cost analyses, and similar evaluations.
- Perform HVAC energy compliance using energy compliance software and provide supporting documentation.
Qualifications and Licensure
- Licensure: Professional Engineering license is required.
- Membership: ASHRAE, SMACNA recommended; additional professional organizations may be considered.
- Certifications: LEED AP, Certified Energy Manager, Well Building, ASHRAE Commissioning Professional (BCxP), ASHRAE Assessment Professional (BEAP), ASHRAE Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), ASHRAE High Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP), ASHRAE Certified HVAC Designer (CHD).
Experience
- 10+ years working in an MEP engineering consulting firm on multiple building types.
- 6+ years working as a licensed professional engineer.
- Project experience across multiple market segments preferred (Healthcare, Education, Commercial, Civic, Retail).
Computer Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Proficient in Autodesk Revit.

Compensation and Benefits
Pay: $125,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
