Job Description

Tesla seeks a Test Engineer to support the reliability and uptime of automation equipment and assembly lines at the Buffalo, NY campus. The role emphasizes data analysis, troubleshooting, and thorough documentation to help meet production targets.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct proactive data analysis and voice of the customer discussions to understand challenges with post-deployment test equipment, advocating solutions that align with both equipment and production goals
  • Pursue continuous improvement through equipment troubleshooting and engineering analysis of cycle time, availability, and yield
  • Assist with equipment troubleshooting and qualification during development and ramp-up phases
  • Provide ongoing troubleshooting support for testers after deployment, including responding to downtime events

Requirements

  • Experience with a broad range of test and automation high-voltage systems, production machinery, industrial sensors, data acquisition, safety, and I/O devices such as pogo pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, current and power meters, and PLCs
  • Proficiency in electrical design and drafting using EPLAN or AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with the NRTL program, NFPA, and UL standards
  • Programming experience in Python, Go, and LabView
  • Experience setting up and troubleshooting tester communication protocols such as CAN bus
  • Strong technical writing ability, including developing technical standards and translating complex data into clear, actionable insights for technical and non-technical audiences

What to Expect

The opportunity is for a motivated Test Engineer to contribute to the reliability, availability, and maintainability of automation equipment and assembly lines at the Buffalo Gigafactory. The role involves collaborating with Equipment Engineering peers to improve uptime, cycle time, and yield, starting with proactive data analysis to identify challenges and proposing solutions aligned with production goals. Ongoing troubleshooting support will continue until production targets are achieved. Project documentation, including scope, schedule, and budget, is managed throughout the process, and lessons learned are shared to influence Tesla's global standards.

Compensation

  • Associate Test Engineer — USD 82,440 to 123,660 per year
  • Test Engineer — USD 98,640 to 147,960 per year
  • Plus cash and stock awards plus benefits for all levels
  • Pay may vary based on location, knowledge, skills, and experience; the total compensation package may include additional elements. Details will be provided with an employment offer.
