Full Stack Software Engineer (Node.js / React)
Job Description
This mid-level Full Stack Software Engineer role focuses on end-to-end feature ownership on a proprietary in-house platform, from database changes through API work, React UI updates, testing, and deployment. The work takes place in an AWS environment and includes data pipelines, search, and background event-driven processing.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver features from ticket to production, including database schema, REST APIs, React front end, test coverage, and deployment.
- Build and operate within an AWS environment using established practices such as infrastructure as code, proper secrets management, least-privilege access, and monitoring.
- Create and maintain data pipelines that pull from external APIs and bulk government data feeds.
- Develop and improve search capabilities that support daily user workflows, including full-text and faceted search across datasets containing millions of records.
- Handle bug triage and fixes in your platform areas, including reproducing issues when user reports are vague.
- Implement background jobs and event-driven processing for alerts and feed updates.
- Review teammates’ code and write documentation that enables cross-functional support when needed.
- Provide estimates you can stand behind and raise risk or slippage early.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of production full stack experience using Node.js and React.
- Working AWS experience.
- REST API design with real authentication and authorization.
- Depth with a relational or document database.
- Git-based workflows and code review habits, plus comfort working on a small team with lighter process and higher ownership.
- Experience breaking production at least once and ability to explain what was learned.
- Problem-solving approach that escalates support early (asking by hour three when stuck).
- Ability to use AI coding tools effectively, including directing, verifying, and reviewing AI-assisted work rather than avoiding it.
Preferred and Nice to Have
- Strong experience in at least two of the following:
- Search technology: Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or equivalent full-text and faceted search.
- Data ingestion / ETL: consuming external APIs and bulk feeds, with error handling for sources that fail without notice.
- Background jobs and event-driven processing: queues, schedulers, and workers.
