Project Engineer

What you will do

• Support Used Nuclear Fuel Projects assigned to INTEC.
• Serve as Technical Subject Matter Expert for assigned systems and as technical lead for assigned projects.
• Maintain the accuracy and completeness of technical information across documents such as drawings, operating procedures, and system notebooks.
• Ensure technical deliverables for assigned systems and projects are completed per schedule.
• Develop and approve maintenance criteria and corrective actions for assigned systems.
• Define engineering, drafting, procurement, quality, and document control resource needs for assigned work.
• Act as Technical Authority for project design requirements.
• Review and approve changes to configuration-managed documents, including temporary and permanent modifications, field changes, procedure changes, drawing changes, and related documentation, ensuring configuration management remains accurate and thorough for the UNF project.
• Partner with project management to support scope and schedule development and delivery success.
• Provide technical reporting and direction in both a matrix and home-organization structure, including frequent reporting to the Used Nuclear Fuel Engineer Manager and the Project Manager to support consistent, on-time deliverables.
• Take actions required to comply with approved Project Execution plans and procedures.
• Capture and incorporate relevant vendor and project information into deliverables and schedules, including standards, references, lessons learned, repair histories, operational problems, and modification histories.
• Coordinate with Design, Criticality, Nuclear Safety, Analysis, Quality engineering, and drafting as needed to support project deliverables.
• Coordinate with and serve as backup to the Project Manager.
• Support “proceed-at-risk” determinations, planning and scheduling, fuel movement plan/strategy development, resource and budget determinations, and execution of assigned projects.
• Initiate and oversee procurements, including performing material take-offs from designs and working with procurement on ordering and quality-related items.
• Oversee Equipment Acceptance Testing and confirm that designs and equipment meet Technical and Functional Requirements.
• Provide design verification for assigned systems.
• Support maintenance and operations, including identifying and modifying procedures and requirements as necessary.
• Complete assigned projects/tasks as directed by management and maintain training consistent with the Individual Training Plan.

Education and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, electrical, or civil engineering
• Multi-level placement based on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills:
  • Salary Grade 15: 2 years relevant experience
  • Salary Grade 18: 12 years relevant experience

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is required due to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory Site being a federal facility performing work involving national security.
• Effective Monday, May 12, 2025, provide REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) to gain access to all IEC and INL facilities.
• Acceptable document alternatives to REAL ID include Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) / Enhanced ID (EID), U.S. passport or passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), U.S. Department of Defense IDs (including IDs issued to dependents), permanent resident card, border crossing card, Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs), HSPD-12 PIV card, foreign government-issued passport, Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card, TWIC, I-766, U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential, and VHIC. A temporary driver’s license is not acceptable.
• Selective Service: For males born after December 31, 1959, registration with the Selective Service System (SSS) is required to be eligible for employment at IEC.
