Job Description

Software Engineer role at Caterpillar in Decatur, IL (onsite) developing full stack web applications for shop floor users, integrating OT/IoT data with Azure cloud services to visualize real-time manufacturing data and support operational decision making.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement, and maintain end-to-end web applications for shop floor users, covering UI components, APIs, and backend services.
  • Create responsive, intuitive interfaces that visualize real-time manufacturing data and key operational metrics.
  • Build and integrate services that connect OT/IoT devices and enterprise data sources.
  • Optimize performance and scalability within an Azure cloud environment, focusing on high‑throughput, real‑time data workloads.
  • Promote cloud‑native development practices, including microservices, event‑driven design, and distributed systems.
  • Contribute to DevOps and CI/CD pipelines to enable reliable, repeatable, automated deployments.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and drive continuous improvement of deployed applications.
  • Collaborate with operations managers, plant leadership, data engineers, architects, and external partners to define and deliver solutions aligned with business needs.
  • Translate business requirements into robust technical designs and high‑quality software solutions.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Problem solving & customer focus: Ability to tackle problems with a customer‑first mindset and deliver practical, impactful solutions in dynamic environments.
  • Full‑stack web development: Experience delivering end‑to‑end web applications with ownership over significant portions of the solution.
  • Frontend development: Proficiency with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular, including responsive UI design and component‑based architecture.
  • Backend development: Experience building APIs and services using Python (Django/Flask) and/or C#/.NET.
  • Cloud development (Azure): Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure services, including application hosting, data services, and cloud‑native solution design.
  • Data engineering fundamentals: Experience with relational databases such as Azure SQL, including query optimization and data modeling concepts.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Understanding of source control, build/release pipelines, and automated deployment practices.
  • System integration: Experience integrating applications with external systems, including OT/IoT or enterprise platforms.
  • Collaboration & communication: Ability to work effectively within cross‑functional teams and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and business stakeholders.
