The Machine Learning Engineer role at TikTok is centered on advancing multimodal content understanding and short-video recommendations. Based onsite in San Jose, CA, this position leads research, development, and deployment of algorithms aimed at improving business metrics through sophisticated multimodal methods.
Responsibilities
- Spearhead the development of multimodal algorithms for the short-video ecosystem, exploring applications in recommendations and related scenarios to drive key metrics.
- Perform advanced research in multimodal and MLLM technologies, designing algorithms that meet business needs while achieving technical breakthroughs.
- Oversee deployment and integration, ensuring model stability, scalability, and efficiency in production environments.
- Contribute to AI platform design and development, including few-shot/zero-shot capabilities for MLLMs, AI labeling, auto prompting, active learning, continued pretraining, and reinforcement learning.
- Integrate content understanding with recommendation systems, addressing UGC ecosystems, cold-start challenges, interest exploration, and comment understanding.
- Apply multimodal techniques to build next-generation recommendation systems, including generative models and end-to-end approaches.
Requirements
- Proven experience in multimodal content understanding, with expertise in large language models and familiarity with current progress in the field.
- Strong technical foundation in at least one major deep learning framework such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Proactive mindset with a sense of ownership, effective communication, and ability to collaborate across teams.
- Hands-on experience deploying content understanding solutions in search, advertising, or recommendation domains.

Job Information
The base salary range for this position in the selected city is USD 156,000 to 387,600 per year. Compensation may vary outside this range based on qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and location. Base pay is part of the Total Package and may be eligible for discretionary bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units.
