Job Description
At Duke Energy's McGuire Nuclear Station near Huntersville, North Carolina, the Civil Nuclear Engineer III or Senior Civil Nuclear Engineer contributes to the Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering group by guiding engineering design changes, conducting analyses, and supporting licensing screens and on-site activities. This role emphasizes thorough technical evaluation, field involvement, and regulatory alignment to sustain safe and reliable plant operation.
Responsibilities
- Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, including Stress Analysis, Structural Analysis, Dynamic/Seismic Analysis, Steel and Concrete Design.
- Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, determine and present recommendations to resolve issues.
- Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
- Develop or revise design/procurement specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
- Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
- Develop licensing screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
- Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.
- 4-6 years of engineering experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Special Requirements
- The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until fully qualified.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
- May have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities, including callouts with defined response times and potential on-call duties, requiring fitness for duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
- Additional hours may be required to meet workload or business needs.
- Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
Typically an office environment with some plant-based work to conduct system walkdowns and provide field support for modification implementation.
