Staff, Machine Learning Engineer
Job Description
Walmart is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to design, build, and deploy AI and ML systems for the Associate Productivity and Experience team. The role combines hands-on data science with a customer-centric product mindset and requires collaboration across product, engineering, and analytics to deliver scalable, data-driven solutions. This onsite position is based in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Compensation
Salary: USD 130,000 - 338,000 per year
Responsibilities
- Architect and deploy AI/ML models and AI agents, then operate and optimize the solutions.
- Work with Python and mainstream ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, plus agentic frameworks like Pydantic.
- Lead the end-to-end system architecture for GenAI/AI/ML and data-intensive applications.
- Design, develop, and deploy full-stack applications.
- Build production-grade real-time and batch machine learning services.
- Collaborate with product managers to craft user journeys, feedback loops, and telemetry analysis.
- Identify or propose AI/ML use-cases to business teams to improve processes and develop quick MVPs/POCs for stakeholder decisions.
- Own the product end-to-end using technologies such as Java, Node.js, and React.js.
- Review designs and code, providing technical solutions for complex requirements.
- Uphold governance standards and ensure strict data and model governance compliance.
- Adhere to Walmart’s policies, ethics, and integrity standards.
- Engage in innovation and research to stay ahead of technological advances and emerging tools.
- Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders to foster collaboration.
- Support coaching and training of team members to ensure confidence in software usage.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable, robust, user-centric Fullstack/GenAI/AI/ML products and applications.
- Strong understanding of data structures.
- Hands-on experience in systems design, algorithms, and distributed systems.
- Industry-level experience building production-grade AI/ML systems at major tech companies or AI-native startups.
- Experience writing high-performing production-quality Python code.
- Exposure to cloud infrastructure such as OpenStack, Azure, GCP, or AWS.
- Experience working in Agile methodologies.
- Experience using CI/CD, logging, and metrics tools.
- A persistent drive to explore, improve, automate, and optimize systems and tools.
- Strong fundamentals in data structures and algorithms.
- Exposure to information retrieval, statistics, and machine learning.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area, and 4 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or related fields.
- Option 2: 6 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or related areas.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area, and 2 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or related fields.
- Prior work experience in accessibility best practices.
