Interstates is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer for Power and Energy Systems to lead the design, development, and deployment of PLC and SCADA control solutions for power generation, energy storage, and OEM integrations. This on-site role in Omaha, Nebraska emphasizes hands-on commissioning and close collaboration with clients to ensure safe, reliable operation across evolving energy assets.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and deploy PLC and SCADA control systems for complex industrial and power applications, covering generation assets, distributed energy resources, and OEM integrations across Rockwell, Siemens, Ignition, and AVEVA platforms.
- Create and configure human-machine interfaces that enable intuitive real-time monitoring and control across industrial and energy environments.
- Translate project requirements into scalable control architectures while wiring field devices such as generators, switchgear, and energy storage systems using industrial protocols and enterprise platforms.
- Collaborate with clients, engineers, OEMs, and IT/OT teams to deliver fully integrated automation solutions meeting operational, safety, and performance criteria.
- Lead on-site commissioning and startup activities, including FAT/SAT support, troubleshooting, optimization, and operator training to realize field performance.
- Produce and maintain comprehensive project documentation such as control narratives, system descriptions, operator manuals, commissioning records, and change logs.
- Act as a technical resource for clients and internal teams, addressing complex issues, driving system improvements, and ensuring long-term reliability of deployed solutions.
- Keep abreast of advances in industrial automation, OT cybersecurity, and energy applications including DERs, microgrids, and demand response participation.
- Contribute to internal standards, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement while adapting to changing project and business needs.
Requirements
- Experience in energy-intensive or continuous-processing industries such as ethanol, seed oil, pet food, or food and beverage.
- Experience with distributed energy resources (DER), microgrids, energy storage systems, or hybrid generation.
- Familiarity with energy market participation including demand response, peak shaving, ancillary services, and ISO/RTO operations.
- Exposure to cloud platforms, IIoT systems, data analytics, or historian integration.
- Knowledge of OT cybersecurity frameworks and secure system architecture practices.
- Experience integrating OEM equipment into SCADA/PLC environments and unified control systems.
- Strong background in industrial automation programming and startup/commissioning environments.
- Experience working directly with customers on system requirements and technical solution design.
- Hands-on experience with object-oriented programming, UI development, database systems, and system integration across industrial environments.

Education
