Technical Director, Bridge Engineer
Job Description
The Technical Director, Bridge Engineer provides senior technical leadership in Tempe, Arizona, guiding asset management, program management, rehabilitation, and new design efforts for public-sector bridge projects onsite. This role leads bridge engineering activities, mentors staff, and ensures delivery of high-quality, compliant solutions across multiple project phases.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the design lead and guide teams on structure-focused projects, supporting others in project management.
- Direct mid-level engineers, engineers-in-training, and CADD technicians through initial design and plan production.
- Apply advanced structural and civil engineering methodologies to improve infrastructure across concept development, preliminary and final design, and construction for complex transportation initiatives.
- Plan, organize, and supervise engineering activities on bridge projects.
- Develop innovative bridge and transit structure designs for state highways, county roads, and city streets.
- Coordinate with district structures management teams to align project goals and standards.
- Review permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans and contracts, management plans, and inspection reports to ensure regulatory compliance and sound engineering practice.
- Lead large, complex structural projects, defining responsibilities, managing budgets, tracking hours and expenses, and supervising subcontractors and staff to ensure performance targets are met.
- Support long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development for structural engineering with a focus on infrastructure opportunities across planning, design, consulting, and program management.
- Assist in updating the annual tactical action plan for the area.
- Engage with public and private entities to discuss engineering and construction challenges and programs.
- Develop and continuously improve engineering discipline certifications, accreditations, and value proposition.
- Schedule discipline meetings, provide updates, and promote expertise and innovation in project work.
- Act as a lead liaison to external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry groups, and community organizations.
- Develop timelines, pricing, and budget metrics, ensuring designs comply with City, State, and Federal codes and accepted engineering practices.
- Interpret and summarize data and reports to support sound engineering and regulatory conclusions.
- Mentor staff to support growth and professional development, and provide performance guidance to assigned personnel.
- Remain current in the latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
- Collaborate across disciplines to deliver trusted-advisor service and future-ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise ethical decision-making regarding resources and funds, adhering to the Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Experience managing engineering activities on structure-centered transportation projects.
- Minimum 12 years of post-education experience in structural/civil and infrastructure design.
- Engineering license required, with multi-state credentials preferred.
- Arizona Professional Engineer license or eligibility for readily obtainable reciprocity.
- Advanced proficiency with structural engineering principles, design/build processes, standards of care, and permitting.
- Advanced proficiency in bridge design.
- Strong knowledge of construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping and their business impact.
- Advanced ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans and specifications, and verify compliance with regulations.
- Capability to work independently and lead mid-level to senior staff with strict QA/QC adherence.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills for interaction across all organizational levels.
- Strategic problem solving and analytical abilities with attention to detail under pressure.
- Ability to obtain cooperation from diverse stakeholders, including senior management, clients, regulators, and staff without formal authority.
- Advanced proficiency with design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, plus strong modeling and mathematical capabilities.
- Proven safety performance and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies.
- Adaptable with flexible scheduling to meet project needs.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.
