Job Description

Sargent & Lundy offers a hybrid work arrangement for the Lead Electrical Engineer role, with a annual compensation range of USD 116,620 to 179,890. This leadership position guides a project team in the design, modification, and analysis of electrical systems for nuclear material processing, waste treatment, storage and disposal, and commercial nuclear power plants. The role blends design coordination with mentoring and active vendor interface, supported by a culture that encourages peer learning through the firm’s Communities of Practice.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the electrical team lead coordinating the detailed design phases across all electrical engineering activities.
  • Own delivery to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
  • Coordinate systems design activities to guarantee installations and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Develop and review detailed electrical calculations, including arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting studies.
  • Produce design input documentation for drawing production, including master diagrams and master schematics.
  • Collaborate with vendors to prepare material and equipment purchase specifications aligned with client recommendations.
  • Create reports and studies that convey technical information clearly and meet client requirements and S&L formats.
  • Conduct independent reviews of others' work, including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Advance your career through peer learning with other experienced engineers via S&L's Communities of Practice.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers to support their development.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • ABET-accredited BSEE degree required; MSEE preferred.
  • Interest in pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Eligibility to obtain a DOE Q level clearance.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical system design within a project team, ideally in commercial power, DOE, nuclear Navy, or NNSA, including integrated, detailed design for new plants or modifications for existing plants.
  • Experience selecting equipment and materials, defining control philosophy, and preparing and assembling calculations and specifications.
  • Experience with electrical system design including low voltage distribution (transformers, generators, motors), communication systems, equipment selection, and analytical calculations.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading an engineering design team through all project phases.
  • Strong knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems for executing designs.
  • Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a lead or support engineering role.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.

AI and Automation at Sargent & Lundy

You will lead teams to move engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for data driven workflows and the use of automation and AI to improve processes, reduce rework, and deliver cost effective designs.

Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process improvement initiatives, including how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation, while guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used and ensuring results are checked.

Oversight of engineers who program or script in Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel to automate tasks is valued, though not required. Additional learning in Computer Science, AI, Software Engineering, or related fields is encouraged to enable effective oversight of automation and AI enabled engineering workflows.
