Role Overview
This engineering position is based in Chicago, IL 60603 and follows a hybrid schedule requiring in-office presence three days per week. The role centers on advancing transmission line design from 69 kV up to 765 kV, with opportunities to mentor teammates and lead design initiatives to meet client specifications and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design transmission lines in the 69 kV to 765 kV range.
- Mentor and train less experienced design team members.
- Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Prepare reports and studies presenting technical information clearly and in line with client requirements and S&L formats.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based in PLS-CADD.
- Adhere to Sargent & Lundy’s System of Processes.
Qualifications
This position does not sponsor work authorization in the U.S.
- Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- 12 years of transmission design experience.
- Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
- Experience including preparation of scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, determination of design basis, selection of equipment and materials, and preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications.
- Experience working directly with clients on transmission lines from 69 kV through 500 kV.
- Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE, and ANSI.
- Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.
Valued but Not Required Skills and Experience
- PE license
- PMP certification
- Construction experience
- Familiarity with ArcGIS

In this role, you should be prepared to lead teams that utilize modern tools. You will guide engineering problem solving by setting expectations for using data and tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost effective designs. Leadership may involve directing automation and process improvement work, including automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation, and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked. Overseeing engineers who program or script (for example, Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel) to automate tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required. Additional learning in fields such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related areas that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI enabled engineering workflows is also valued.

Compensation and Transparency
Compensation Range: $131,960.00 - $205,330.00
Transparency Statement: Sargent & Lundy discloses compensation ranges that comply with all local and state regulations.
