Job Description

This hybrid remote role leads the design and oversight of high voltage transmission lines in the 69 kV to 765 kV range, including mentoring design team members and coordinating activities to meet specifications, codes, and client requirements. The position involves performing independent design reviews and adhering to Sargent & Lundy’s System of Processes. Compensation ranges from USD 131,960 to 205,330 per year. The role is based in Portland, Oregon, with a hybrid work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and oversee transmission line designs for voltages between 69 kV and 765 kV.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance on design practices.
  • Coordinate design activities to ensure installations and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Produce reports and studies that present technical information clearly and align with client needs and S&L templates.
  • Conduct independent reviews of peer work, including calculations, drawings, and PLS-CADD based transmission line models.
  • Adhere to Sargent & Lundy System of Processes in all tasks.

Requirements

  • BS degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 12 years of transmission design experience.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
  • Experience covering scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, establishment of design basis, equipment and materials selection, and compiling calculations and specifications.
  • Direct collaboration with clients on transmission lines from 69 kV through 500 kV.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Experience reviewing other designers’ drawings.

AI and Automation at Sargent & Lundy

  • You are expected to lead others in solving engineering problems by setting expectations for data driven workflows and the use of automation and AI to improve efficiency and design cost effectiveness.
  • Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process improvement efforts, such as automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation, while guiding when and how AI tools are employed and ensuring results are verified.
  • Overseeing engineers who code or script (for example, Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.
  • Additional learning in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or related fields is valued to support effective oversight of automation and AI-enabled engineering workflows.
