At The Travelers Companies, Inc., the Data Engineering team helps build reliable pipelines that make data easier to access and use across the enterprise. In this Data Engineer II role in Hartford, CT (onsite), you will design, build, deploy, and operationalize complex data solutions that enable analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and business intelligence/insights.

What you will do
- Build and operationalize complex data solutions, applying transformations, correcting problems, and recommending approaches for data cleansing and data quality.
- Design complex data solutions and determine value by analyzing complex sources, including recommending which data to include in analytical processes.
- Apply core data management competencies such as data governance, data security, and data quality.
- Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and to educate end users on complex data products and the analytic environment.
- Conduct data and system analysis to assess, resolve, and correct complex defects and incidents.
- Test data movement, transformation code, and data components.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you need
- 8 years of relevant experience.
- Proven experience building ETL pipelines using tools such as AWS, dbt, or other ETL tools.
- Understanding of AWS cloud services and data architecture patterns, including S3, IAM, Lambda, and CloudWatch.
- Experience with data modeling techniques such as star/snowflake schema and data warehouse design principles.
- Nice to have: Experience with Ab Initio for enterprise-scale ETL development.
- Strong delivery skills, including the ability to determine software design strategy and methodology, use automated tests and informed feedback loops for quality and production readiness, and monitor the health of work efforts and adjacent systems.
- A strong problem-solving approach using data and proofs of concept to develop creative solutions for difficult problems with broad implications, along with reflection, measurement of impact, and continuous optimization.
- Excellent communication skills, including building business partnerships, explaining technology concepts in business-friendly terms, documenting initiatives clearly, and listening attentively to other ideas.
Required education
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
Compensation
Annual base salary range: USD 126,500 - 208,700. The final salary will be determined based on factors such as scope, complexity, and location, as well as skills, education, training, credentials, and experience. Employees may also be eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.
