This role centers on designing and delivering electrical and fluid controls systems and the associated software and documentation for applications such as welders, robots, and assembly/conveyance/transfer systems, with the autonomy to make decisions, manage resources, and coordinate with technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Review and apply customer specifications (corporate and plant), relevant standards, and local and/or national electric codes when designing hardware schematics.
- Develop electrical and fluid schematic packages, including I/O layout, magnetic circuit design, fusing, control panel layouts, bills of material, and cable layouts.
- Complete required sizing calculations for power, heat dissipation, wire sizing, fusing, and related items.
- Perform network layout and traffic analysis calculations.
- Research, develop, and customize new hardware and software interfaces.
- Coordinate and review work with Technical Leaders, Automation Engineers, Sr. Controls Engineers, and other colleagues to maintain consistency within the project.
- Review detailed work produced by Entry Level Controls Engineers for hardware schematics and also for logic and HMI.
- Work within scope definition and timing (due date) requirements.
- Modify existing logic for kit designs and create logic for simple to intermediate complexity systems using existing references.
- Develop HMI screens and build the interface from scratch when required.
- Apply customer specifications and standards to design software programs.
Requirements
- 5+ years of related work experience, including projects in the Automotive sector (GM, Ford, FCA, etc.) and Tier 1 suppliers (Dana, Magna, Tower, etc.).
- Master all competencies of Jr. and Mid-level Controls Engineers.
- Training typically includes both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Computer Engineering or Electronics Technology, or a minimum of five years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Windows and Microsoft Office proficiency (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.), plus high competence with AutoCAD / ePlan.
- High competence with HMIs and Control and Safety PLCs (Allen Bradley, Siemen’s, Modicon, Dynex, etc.) and associated application software.
- Knowledge of numbering systems (binary, hex, octal, and real/floating point) and applications, including Word/Bit addressing schemes.
- Knowledge of logical operators: AND, OR, NOT, XOR.
- Ability to read and interpret customer specifications, electrical controls schematics, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Knowledge of machines, tools, and print reading, plus understanding of mechanical systems and how they relate to controls design.
- Ability to produce creative problem-solving approaches while limiting creativity when customer requirements or commonality of designs dictate.
- Ability to write technical documents and reports for engineering/technical writers and project documentation.
- Ability to train and mentor other Controls Engineers.
- Strong troubleshooting and performance improvement skills, including identifying causes of operating errors and determining corrective actions.
- Ability to write computer programs for various purposes.
